Derrin Hale's Abandoned Satchel
Derrin Hale's Abandoned Satchel
Beyond the trapped aisle, among the freight tags, shipping records, and less ordinary supplies stored toward the rear of the building, a small canvas satchel has been shoved beneath a shelving unit.
The bag belongs to Derrin Hale. His name is written in charcoal inside the flap, along with the initials D.H. scratched into the brass buckle.
Derrin evidently reached Reiver's Right and worked here for at least a short time. The satchel contains a change of clothes, a river worker's gloves, a whetstone, several lengths of waxed cord, and a folded letter that was never sent.
Maelin,
I made it to Reiver's Right. The pay was real, at least. They handed me more for two days of freight work than I usually make in a week.
I don't like the job.
Half the cargo is ordinary enough, but some of the loads aren't being entered with the rest. We bring them into the storehouse after dark and I'm told to leave the unloading to Hendrick's men.
Nobody will tell me what's in those crates. Every time I ask, somebody reminds me how much I'm being paid not to.
I'm finishing what I agreed to do and coming back to Macridi. I should have listened to you.
I'll tell you the whole ridiculous story when I see you.
Derrin's Freight Pay
Wrapped in a scrap of oilcloth at the bottom of the satchel is the advance Derrin received for the freight job.
- Coin: 8 gp in mixed Druman coin.
- Gear: One well-made 50-foot coil of rope and a small waterproof tinderbox.
- Clue: The unusually high advance supports Derrin's claim that someone was paying generously for discretion.
Derrin definitely reached Reiver's Right. He was employed moving freight into the Storehouse and noticed that certain shipments were being handled separately from the camp's ordinary inventory.
His satchel being left behind suggests that he did not depart the camp normally, but the note does not establish whether Derrin was killed, captured, infected, or fled with the other workers.
Returning the letter or news of its discovery to Prophetess Maelin Vos advances the Sanctitude Saunas sidequest and confirms that her concerns about Derrin were justified.
