Shadows Over Profit's Flow

The settlement of Macridi is a study in sharp contrasts. Wealthy Kalistocrats unbind their fortunes at the Assembly Institute and relax at the Sanctitude Saunas, while off-duty loggers gather at the Gilded Ledger Tavern and Salty Bark Tannery to trade frontier rumors. Governed by the strict economic tenets of the Prophecies of Kalistrade, the town treats the darkwood canopy of the Palakar Forest as a vast ledger to be managed. For generations, a tense truce has held between the timber operations and the wild fey courts who call the ancient woods home.

That fragile balance is beginning to fail. Tainted logs veined with black, oily sap float into the processing bays, jamming the heavy iron winches at Karland's Sawmill and ruining blades. Downriver, silence has fallen over the historic logging encampment of Reiver's Right, and communications have ceased completely. Word has been sent out to all three fey courts—the Court of Endless Revelry, the Cedar Court, and the Court of Seasons—to determine if the wilderness is reacting to a broken pact, but so far, no word has come back.

Because Reiver's Right sits downriver of all major settlements, the bureaucratic elites in New Macridi dismiss its silence as irrelevant to upriver supply chains. But Danum Karland knows the forest root system is an interconnected web. As ominous rumors spread from the Veridical Scriptorium to the local apothecary, Karland grows desperate for answers. With the Blackjacket mercenaries bound to corporate security, independent hands are needed to make the trip downriver, investigate Reiver's Right, and trace the rot before Macridi itself is consumed.

A Call for Investigators: Danum Karland seeks discreet, capable adventurers at his Old Macridi sawmill to investigate the silent downriver camp and track the source of the spreading blight.

The Lore of Druma

The Kalistocracy & The Palakar Canopy

The Kalistocracy of Druma stands as a nation born from financial ambition and meticulous long-term investment. Its capital, Kerse, shines with gold and marble, but its operational foundation lies in frontier trade hubs like Macridi that harvest the vast riches of the Palakar Forest. Ruled by the Resplendent Bureaucracy, civil life is guided by the Prophecies of Kalistrade—a secular philosophy preaching personal wealth accumulation, strict purity, and the total avoidance of physical contact with non-believers. At top elite institutions like the Assembly Institute and Sanctitude Saunas, high-ranking Kalistocrats and Blackjacket soldiers train, negotiate, and unbind their fortunes.

The region's history stretches back millennia to the ancient Macridi Blade culture, a Kellid society that crafted serrated flint weapons and raised clay barrows north of Profit's Flow. Following Earthfall, dwarven rule gave way to human independence under the Kerse Accord of 2332 AR. In Macridi, this history produced a unique, dual-layered settlement: elite corporate figures manage trade tallies at the Veridical Scriptorium and commission high-end darkwood craft at Best Fit Furnishings, while the blue-collar frontier works at Karland's Sawmill, drinks cheap cider at the Gilded Ledger Tavern, and supplies raw timber from camps like Sanick's Point and Fort Redstone.

Legal Framework: The Blood Price.

Under the Prophecies of Kalistrade, moral and legal transgressions are codified purely in terms of financial compensation. If a merchant breaks a contract, destroys property, or causes harm, civil clerks at the Veridical Scriptorium calculate the exact "Blood Price" owed in coin. This strict framework governs human business disputes and forms the baseline for Macridi's fragile co-existence with the surrounding wilderness.

That peace relies heavily on the three distinct fey courts dwelling deep within the Palakar Forest. The wild satyrs of the Court of Endless Revelry roam the eastern woods in continuous celebration; the reclusive dryads of the Cedar Court guard the oldest trees in the northwest; and the formidable nymphs of the Court of Seasons govern southern glades with strict martial law under the rogue nymph Cyrella. Mediated by intermediaries like Sorzmig Koob at Fanciful Inquiries, logging ventures harvest darkwood only where permitted, balancing human profit against fey tolerance.

However, this delicate equilibrium is now fraying. A dark, foul runoff flecked with black sap has begun floating down Profit's Flow, clogging the intake bays at Karland's Sawmill. Upriver, all communication from the logging encampment at Reiver's Right has abruptly ceased. Meanwhile, the three fey courts have withdrawn behind hostile, panicked perimeters, and rumors circulate through Macridi's workshops of weird stone markers appearing near the ancient Desolation Blade Mounds.

Cultural Example: The Three Fey Courts of Palakar.

Macridi's survival has always depended on navigating the disparate personalities of the forest's rulers. While human loggers interact with the roving satyrs of Endless Revelry and seek mediation through gnomish brokers, the Cedar Court dryads and Court of Seasons nymphs remain fiercely protective of their borders. With all three courts now behaving with unprecedented hostility and alarm, the forest itself appears to be reacting to a deep, subterranean threat.

With the Blackjacket army bound to high-level corporate security and New Macridi slow to intervene, independent investigators are needed to travel up the North Road. Unraveling the mystery will require navigating delicate fey diplomacy, investigating abandoned logging camps, and uncovering what dark forces are seeping into the soil before the entire region descends into chaos.

Every river in Druma runs with gold, but every log harvested from the Palakar Forest carries the weight of an ancient balance. The party's investigation must restore harmony to the upper riverways before profit and prophecy alike are swallowed by the darkwood.
