E18 — Workers' Quarters
Workers' Quarters
The hidden workforce left behind the human cost of the excavation.
Rows of narrow bunks fill the chamber. Work coats hang from pegs, boots sit beneath beds, and tin cups remain on a scarred table.
The room was abandoned quickly. Personal gear is still here, but travel packs, food sacks, and water skins are conspicuously missing.
Some occupants were Golden Hand loyalists; many were ordinary laborers told they were doing drainage, stabilization, foundation repair, or special maintenance.
Challenge: Reconstruct the Final Shift
Success shows the quarters emptied in stages. Critical success identifies a final crew roster with three names marked deep shift and never checked back in.
Lower Works Crew Roster
A grease-stained slate ledger lists final-week underground assignments under vague headings such as drainage, retaining, east face, and deep shift.
Evidence: Hendrick was assigning labor underground on a regular schedule.
Derrin Hale Freight Chit
D. Hale — river freight, sealed cases, lower hoist. Paid on delivery. Released after unloading.
Sidequest Clue: Derrin definitely reached Reiver's Right and delivered cargo into the Lower Works. He was alive and paid when unloading finished; this does not establish what happened afterward.
Workers' Lockbox
A communal iron lockbox contains 10 gp in mixed wages, three inexpensive keepsakes, and unsent letters. Shift Key or Thievery DC 15.
Returning the keepsakes to survivors may matter more than their resale value.
