Veiled Current Pin

UncommonInvestedMagicalOccult

Price 30 gp

Usage worn (brooch); Bulk —

This narrow brooch is wrought from blackened silver around a crescent of smoky teal glass. A fine brass line winds across it like a river seen at midnight. On its underside, a concealed spring keeps the pin perfectly still, even when its wearer is running or climbing. Such pieces have quietly changed hands among Macridi locksmiths and river couriers.

Activate ◆ (concentrate, manipulate)

Frequency twice per day

Requirements You have invested the pin and are wearing it, are adjacent to a nonmagical lock, and have a thieves’ toolkit available.

Effect The pin vibrates with a nearly inaudible hum as you study the lock. You gain a +1 circumstance bonus to the next Thievery check you attempt to Pick that Lock before the end of your turn. If the check succeeds and the lock opens, the mechanism makes no audible click and you leave no obvious fresh tool marks.

Limitations This activation applies to one check, whether successful or not. It does not automatically open a lock, silence the door or container itself, bypass magical alarms, suppress hazards, or let you Pick a Lock without the normal actions and tools. Its circumstance bonus does not stack with other circumstance bonuses to the same check.

Rogue

Item benefit While you are a rogue who has invested and is wearing the pin, you gain the benefits of the Tumble Behind feat. If you already have the feat, its benefits do not stack.

Effect When you successfully Tumble Through an enemy’s space, that enemy is off-guard against the next attack you make against it before the end of your turn.

This benefit does not grant a free Tumble Through action, improve your movement, or add Sneak Attack damage beyond your usual class abilities.

Cast ◆◆

Range 30 feet

Duration sustained

Effect Create a simple illusory sound or vision. The sound cannot contain intelligible words or elaborate music. A visual illusion fits within a 5-foot cube and is obviously crude when viewed from within 15 feet.

When you Cast or Sustain the spell, you can attempt to Create a Diversion using the illusion, gaining a +2 circumstance bonus to the Deception check. A creature against which the attempt fails disbelieves that figment.

The pin casts Figment at rank 1. The illusion does not create real cover, make a creature invisible, or automatically cause an enemy to be off-guard.

Special The brooch must be invested. Hushed Entry and Figment require no spellcasting or particular class; Tumble Behind benefits only a rogue wearing the invested pin. The item grants no additional class feats, actions, spell slots, or Sneak Attack damage. Hushed Entry’s daily uses belong to the pin and do not refresh when it changes hands.

GM Placement A sealed lockbox in the Long Dividend’s cargo, a smuggler’s tool roll, or an Old Macridi watchmaker’s hidden stock. The pin’s maker may have supplied the Quiet Current.

Custom homebrew permanent item.
