Mudjaw Beach — Encounter XP Analysis
5 level-1 PCs • 2 Reefclaws • 2 Grindylows • 1 Blue-Ringed Octopus • 3 Mudjaw Lureblooms
Encounter Budget for Five Level-1 PCs
| Difficulty | 4-PC Budget | 5th-PC Adjustment | 5-PC Budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | 60 XP | +15 XP | 75 XP |
| Moderate | 80 XP | +20 XP | 100 XP |
| Severe | 120 XP | +30 XP | 150 XP |
| Extreme | 160 XP | +40 XP | 200 XP |
Creatures Present
| Creature | Level | Qty. | XP Each | XP | Actual Role in the Encounter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reefclaw | 1 | 2 | 40 | 80 | Prey. The Reefclaws are being hunted by the Grindylows. They may defend themselves, lash out at PCs who get too close, or try to reach safer water rather than intentionally engaging the party. |
| Grindylow | 0 | 2 | 30 | 60 | Hunters. Their immediate objective is catching a Reefclaw for dinner. Unless the PCs interfere, the Grindylows have no particular reason to abandon their prey and concentrate on adventurers. |
| Blue-Ringed Octopus | 0 | 1 | 30 | 30 | Independent objective. The octopus wants to reach or remain at the log. It is not part of the Grindylow hunt and does not need to fight unless something interferes with it. |
| Mudjaw Lurebloom | 2 | 3 | 60 | 180* | Localized terrain threat. The Lureblooms cannot crawl onto land. PCs who leave the water or route around their feeding areas can simply disengage from them. |
| Mobile creatures if the PCs somehow defeat all of them | 170 XP | Above Severe, Below Extreme | |||
| Nominal total including all 3 Lureblooms | 350 XP | Not a realistic single fight | |||
*The Mudjaw XP is useful for measuring their statistics, but counting all three as ordinary combatants badly exaggerates the practical encounter difficulty because they cannot pursue creatures onto land.
Even 170 XP overstates the likely danger, because that number assumes every mobile creature spends the encounter fighting the party. The scene does not naturally work that way. The Grindylows want Reefclaws, the Reefclaws want to survive, and the octopus wants the log.
Predator and Prey
Retreat Matters
| Creature | What It Wants | When It Leaves |
|---|---|---|
| Reefclaw | Escape the Grindylows, defend itself, and find safer water. | If badly wounded or given a clear route away from the hunters, it should attempt to escape rather than remain in a losing fight. |
| Grindylow | Kill or capture a Reefclaw for food. | If the hunt becomes too dangerous, a Grindylow loses its prey, or the PCs make themselves substantially more dangerous than the meal is worth. |
| Blue-Ringed Octopus | Reach or control the log. | If seriously threatened, injured, or driven away from its objective, it has no reason to remain and trade attacks. |
| Mudjaw Lurebloom | Catch creatures entering its feeding area. | It does not retreat in the conventional sense; creatures simply escape by leaving its water and moving onto land or beyond its limited reach. |
What the XP Math Actually Means
The 170 XP mobile-creature total represents the worst plausible version of the mobile encounter: the party decides to engage everything and somehow keeps every mobile creature involved until it is defeated.
That is possible, but it should not be the default flow of the scene. At the start, a large portion of the encounter's actions are already being spent on creature-versus-creature interaction. Grindylows pursue Reefclaws. Reefclaws flee or defend themselves. The octopus moves toward the log.
Mudjaw Lureblooms
The three Lureblooms technically account for another 180 XP, but they should not be treated as three additional enemies automatically added to the battle. They cannot crawl onto land, and their Creeping Pursuit only lets them reposition very slowly through suitable shallow water.
Their real purpose is to shape movement. A character wading through their territory risks Sweetwater Pollen, Feeding Tendrils, Grab, and Crushing Roots. A character who climbs onto the beach or moves outside that territory is effectively safe from pursuit.
Overall Encounter Assessment
The scene contains 170 XP of genuinely mobile creatures, putting the theoretical mobile fight above Severe but below Extreme for five level-1 PCs. The three Mudjaw Lureblooms add substantial localized danger, but they are avoidable because they cannot leave the water.
In actual play, the encounter should usually be easier than the 170 XP number suggests because the creatures are not a team and are not committed to fighting the party. The Grindylows are hunting dinner, the Reefclaws are trying not to become dinner, the octopus wants the log, and every mobile creature can decide that survival is more important than continuing the fight.
That gives the encounter a useful safety valve: combat can naturally shed enemies as it develops. A Reefclaw can escape into deeper water, a wounded Grindylow can abandon the hunt, and the octopus can disappear once the log is no longer worth contesting. The PCs can likewise withdraw onto land and largely remove the Mudjaws from the equation.
