Macridi

Macridi: The Quiet Crossroads
A Comprehensive Handout on the Logging Capital of the Palakar

1. The Geography of the Confluence

Nestled at the exact confluence of the Great Goldpan River and the Profit’s Flow, Macridi is the economic heart of central Druma. The Great Goldpan flows from the northeast, bringing water from the distant mountains, while the Profit’s Flow snakes from the southeast, carrying silt from the rich lowlands. Where they meet, they form the vast Lake Encarthan-bound waterways that carry Macridi’s endless supply of lumber across the entire region. The town is built on three artificial islands raised in the river, connected by sturdy dwarven-built stone bridges.

The surrounding Palakar Forest is dense, primeval, and uniquely magical. Unlike the dark forests of other nations, the Palakar is actively managed by intelligent fey. The town is surrounded by high timber walls, not to keep out enemies, but to keep out the dangerous wildlife that occasionally ventures from the deeper, untamed regions of the woods. The climate is humid and temperate, with heavy rains in spring that make the riverbanks treacherous and incredible mudflows that constantly threaten the town’s foundations.

The exact location of the town is considered auspicious by the Kalistocrats. It is the only point where the two most profitable rivers in Druma meet, meaning any ship traveling between the western mines and the eastern markets must pass through Macridi’s port. This geographic chokehold makes the town technically a "subsidiary" of the capital, but functionally, it holds the keys to the entire forest economy.

Macridi is a town of stark contrasts. Despite being one of the wealthiest settlements in the Kalistocracy, its residents actively hide their affluence. Kalistocrats here do not wear the ostentatious gold and silk found in Kerse; instead, they wear heavy, practical wool coats over their mandatory white robes. This philosophy—"investment over indulgence"—is strictly observed in the town. Frugality is a social badge of honor, and the largest estates in the town are hidden behind the humble facades of sawmills or storage sheds.

The social hierarchy is strictly defined by the Prophecies of Kalistrade and the Blood Price. The Logging Guild sits at the top, followed by the Bureaucrats who audit the river taxes. Below them are the timber merchants, who hold a great deal of local power but are technically ranked below the guild masters. The lowest strata are the loggers themselves, who live in wooden shanties and earn wages that barely allow them to survive, let alone climb the ladder of the Prophecies.

Despite the rigid class system, there is a distinctively independent spirit in Macridi. The isolation of the forest and the constant dealings with the Fey have made the locals much more superstitious and pragmatic than their urban counterparts. They are bound together by a shared secret: everyone knows about the Blood Price, but few actually pay it in full. Instead, they barter services, favors, or favors from the fey to settle their debts, creating a complex web of hidden obligations.

The Logging Guild of Macridi is the most powerful entity in the town. It controls the rights to log the Palakar Forest, and its authority is absolute. The Guildmaster—currently the stern and calculating Venna—holds a seat on the Resplendent Bureaucracy, making her one of the most influential Kalistocrats outside of Kerse. The guild not only manages the felling of trees but also negotiates the delicate truce with the fey courts. If the Guildmaster gives the order, thousands of blackjackets and loggers will mobilize within a day.

The Blackjackets are the standing military force of the town. They are elite, highly disciplined mercenaries employed directly by the Bureaucracy. They serve as bodyguards, tax collectors, and, crucially, enforcers of the Blood Price. They are universally feared by the local population and easily identified by their black oilcloth coats, leather masks, and heavy, long-handled axes. They operate out of the Timber Hall, a massive, unadorned fortress built right at the western confluence.

The Blackjackets have a reputation for being ruthless, but they are never cruel. Their jobs are strictly legal: collect the debt, seize the collateral, or kill the fleeing debtor. Their strict code of conduct—and their refusal to take bribes—makes them reliable, terrifying, and fiercely loyal to the guild.

4. The Fey Courts and the Ancient Pact

The most defining feature of Macridi is its unique relationship with the fey. The region is home to the Court of Endless Revelry (a court of satyrs) and the Court of Seasons (a court of nymphs). The humans of Macridi do not rule the forest; they are tenants of the fey. This ancient agreement, written in a language older than humanity, dictates that the loggers may only fell trees that the fey have marked as "old" or "dying."

In exchange for this compliance, the fey act as scouts and guides for the loggers. A nymph or satyr will often lead a crew to a hidden grove of incredible darkwood, which can then be harvested. This pact is highly profitable for both sides, but it is deeply fragile. Any disrespect to the forest—cutting an unmarked tree, polluting a river, or killing a fey creature—is a violation of the Blood Price. The fey are entitled to take a human life to settle the debt, often in a horrifying manner.

However, as the story begins, this ancient pact is shattering. The Court of Seasons has sealed itself away, and the Court of Endless Revelry has gone silent. The forest is becoming hostile, and the fey—who were once the town's most valuable allies—are now viewed with suspicion and fear. The breakdown of this diplomatic and economic alliance is the true root of Macridi's current crisis.

GM Note: The fey of the Palakar are not the cute, helpless creatures of fairy tales. They are ancient, dangerous, and deeply lawful in their own regard. The town of Macridi survives only because they honor the terms of the treaty.

5. The Dark Legends of the Region

Despite its prosperity, Macridi is surrounded by dark legends and ancient ruins. The most prominent of these is Reiver's Right, an abandoned logging camp to the east. It is here that the ancient Macridi Blade culture first settled, long before the dwarves came. The ruins of the culture's civilization are vast, built over by modern logging camps. Legends say that the ancient Kellids made an even older pact with the forest—one that demanded blood. When the modern loggers broke that pact, a blight was unleashed. Now, trees at Reiver's Right have been known to scream, and men have been found with roots growing from their lungs.

To the north lies the Pulgari Estate, a grand manor built by an industrialist who tried to bypass the fey and use a direct portal to Hell to cut out the middleman. The ritual failed, leaving a permanent tear in the fabric of reality. Celestial Archons and Infernal Devils now contest the region, and the dark energy from the estate seeps into the rivers, poisoning the water of the Great Goldpan.

Finally, to the west, lie the Desolation Blade Mounts—mysterious mounds of hardened clay that predate all human civilization. They are marked with the symbol of a pale hand and a blackened blade. No one knows who built them or why, but visitors often return haunted, carrying the symbol home with them. The appearance of these symbols is an ominous portent that the era of the ancient Macridi Blade Cult is returning to reclaim its territory.

6. Trade Routes and Economy

Macridi’s primary export is darkwood, a rare and highly sought-after wood that is magically light and exceptionally strong. The town acts as a massive lumber mill, and the sound of saws biting into ancient timber is the constant heartbeat of the settlement. Ships leave Macridi daily, carrying raw darkwood, finished darkwood shields, and barrels of sap that are used in alchemy.

  • Darkwood: Used for constructing elegant, lightweight weapons and shields.
  • Fey Gifts: Rare magical artifacts, enchanted fruits, and botanical oddities obtained through trade with the courts.
  • Gold and Mithral: Raw ore from the mountains transported via river.
  • Siege Engines: Because of their wood stores, Macridi is a prime manufacturer of advanced siege engines.

However, the river trade is currently suffering. The poisoning of the Great Goldpan has stopped many merchants from traveling through the region. The guild is losing money rapidly, and the Blood Price for the missing logs is mounting. Unless the party can restore the river’s purity and reopen the trade routes, the Blackjackets will begin seizing property, and the town will descend into a bloody civil war between rival merchant factions.

Current Crisis: The Guildmaster Venna has put out a bounty for any party willing to investigate the source of the corruption. As a result, the town is currently full of mercenaries, spies, and adventurers—many of whom will sell the party out for a quick profit.
