Cedar Court

The Cedar Court
A Comprehensive Handout on the Dryad Court of the Palakar

1. The Sanctuary of the Ancients

Deep in the reclusive northwestern reaches of the Palakar Forest lies the Cedar Court, the most isolated and protective of the three fey dominions. Unlike the moving revels of the satyrs or the martial glades of the nymphs, the Cedar Court is structured around a sacred congregation of ancient, towering cedar and oak trees. The air here is cool, damp, and fragrant with evergreen resin, damp earth, and moss. Sunlight filters through a dense green canopy in soft, emerald beams, illuminating ancient stone circles and tranquil pools.

The Cedar Court serves as the living memory and spiritual heart of the Palakar. The dryads who dwell here are bound to the oldest trees in Avistan, their spirits inextricably woven into the deep root systems that span the forest floor. It is a place of quiet contemplation, ancient druidic tradition, and fierce ecological stewardship, governed by solemn vows made when humanity was still young.

While other courts interact with mortals through commerce or armed blockades, the Cedar Court has traditionally maintained distance. Under the terms of the Oath of Everlasting Friendship, the dryads allow only the most conservative logging along distant perimeters, ensuring that no ancestral heartwood is ever disturbed by human saws.

2. The Forest's Memory

Leadership within the Cedar Court falls to the oldest among them. The court is led by Elder Ryauhm, an advanced dryad druid whose bonded tree can trace its lineage back to before the Palakar Forest took its modern form. Ryauhm possesses immense wisdom and a deep connection to the land's primal magic, acting as the primary keeper of the Oath of Everlasting Friendship that has long preserved peace between fey and loggers.

Under Ryauhm, the dryads operate not through rigid military ranks, but as a unified botanical network. They communicate across miles through the deep subterranean root-web, sensing vibrations, water purity, and environmental changes instantly. Each dryad acts as a guardian for a specific grove, tending to the fauna, purifying soil, and singing ancient growth-hymns to sustain the canopy.

The law of the Cedar Court is absolute: Preserve the Sacred Root. To fell a bonded tree or poison the water table is considered a capital crime against the forest itself. Mortals who enter the grove with reverence and proper offerings of unrefined iron-free soil, clean spring water, or rare botanical seeds are treated with cool, formal hospitality.

3. The Scorched Earth Crisis

The spreading subterranean blight has struck the Cedar Court with tragic severity. Because the dryads' trees are connected to the deep water table, the toxic black sap seeping through the root-web is poisoning the grove from beneath. In response, the dryads have been forced into radical, heartbreak containment measures—severing major root networks and burning their own beloved groves to create smoldering firelines against the advancing rot.

This desperate quarantine has created immense physical and emotional suffering. As bonded trees are sacrificed to stop the infection, dryads wither and fall into agonizing decay. Elder Ryauhm himself has absorbed vast quantities of toxins through his expansive root system, leaving his majestic wooden form cracking and weeping black sap as he fights to maintain his composure.

Furthermore, the court's isolated root-severing has had unintended consequences. By cutting off root-lines in isolation, the dryads are accidentally trapping subterranean pressure and redirecting the spore-pods toward neighboring regions, fueling panic across the forest.

GM Note: Ryauhm's health is rapidly failing. He recognizes that the blight carries the unmistakable signature of extraplanar corruption, but his court's isolated tactics cannot stop the outbreak at its source without outside intervention and cross-court cooperation.

4. Entering the Sacred Canopy

For travelers permitted entry into the Cedar Court, the atmosphere is one of profound beauty overshadowed by mourning. The court surrounds Elder Ryauhm’s monumental heartwood tree, where dryads gather in silent circles to channel healing magic into the soil. Visitors are expected to speak softly, tread lightly upon exposed roots, and declare their intent before the council of elders.

If an adventuring party demonstrates genuine respect for nature and offers assistance in purifying blighted soil or defending firelines, the dryads prove to be invaluable allies. They can grant enchanted wooden charms, reveal secret pathways through dense thickets, and share deep historical lore regarding ancient pre-Earthfall landmarks buried beneath the roots.

However, those who disrespect the grove or bring open flame into uninfected areas face immediate, ruthless retribution. Entangling vines, razor-sharp thorn brambles, and woodland predators will quickly drag offenders into the dark earth to serve as fertilizer for the dying trees.

5. Radical Desperation & Internal Friction

As smoldering ash covers northwestern Palakar, a desperate faction within the Cedar Court advocates for total forest severance. Believing that humanity's upriver activities have permanently corrupted the water supply, these radical dryads wish to sever every major root leading toward Macridi, completely shutting down Profit's Flow and isolating the forest behind an impenetrable wall of thorns.

This faction believes that sacrificing human trade lines is a small price to pay for the wilderness's survival. They have begun planting *Blight-Bane Brambles*—aggressive, thorny vines that choke riverways and destroy wooden hulls—along the northern riverbanks to block all vessel traffic.

Elder Ryauhm resists this radical course, knowing that total isolation will not stop the subterranean source of the rot and will inevitably provoke a full-scale military invasion by Blackjacket mercenaries. He desperately needs diplomatic intermediaries who can bridge the gap between the fey courts and present a unified front before his grove burns to the ground.

Immediate Danger: If Elder Ryauhm succumbs to the toxins in his root system, the Cedar Court will fall under the control of radical hardliners, triggering mass forest burnings and an open war with the timber operations in Macridi.

6. Secrets of the Cedar Court

  • The Heartwood Vault: Deep beneath Elder Ryauhm's central roots lies a natural cavern containing petrified seeds from pre-Earthfall flora, capable of restoring extinct plant species if planted in purified soil.
  • The Resin of Cleansing: The oldest cedars produce a rare, golden amber resin that can neutralize caustic poisons and temporarily halt the spread of lignifying blight when applied to wood or flesh.
  • The Whispering Sap: By pressing an ear against an uncorrupted cedar trunk, a skilled listener can hear vibrations carrying news and messages from distant corners of the forest's connected root network.
