Reiver's Right

Reiver's Right
The Blighted Heart of the Palakar

1. The Rise and Fall of the Camp

Once, Reiver's Right was a booming logging camp located at the far eastern edge of the Palakar Forest. Named after the Macridi Blade warlord who first claimed the land as his "right" to raid, it was the most productive and profitable timber operation in Druma. The Blackjackets patrolled its perimeter, and the flow of darkwood from the camp to Macridi was unbroken for over a hundred years. It was a brutal place, built on greed, sweat, and a complete disregard for the ancient fey laws.

The loggers of Reiver's Right cut indiscriminately. They ignored the treaties with the Court of Endless Revelry and the Court of Seasons, felling ancient and sacred trees that were marked for protection. The fey complained, but the Camp Overlord at the time, a greedy and cruel Kalistocrat named Bridden Pulgari, paid the Blood Price for every violation, believing that gold could buy him anything—even the destruction of a forest.

But the forest remembers. The ancient magic of the Macridi Blade culture slumbered beneath the soil, waiting for a trigger. When the loggers dug deep into the earth to expand their quarry, they unwittingly unearthed an ancient burial mound full of cursed artifacts and the blackened bones of the Kellid kings. The desecration was the final straw. The forest rose up and took its revenge in a single, terrifying night.

2. The Nature of the Blight

The blight that now consumes Reiver's Right is not a natural sickness. It is a magical plague of sap and rage, born from the breaking of the ancient oaths and the resurrection of a thousand-year-old curse. The ground itself is black and slick with toxic ooze, smelling of decay and burning stone. The trees that grow here are twisted, weeping, and have bark that looks like human flesh stretched over bone. The wood screams when cut.

This is the heart of the corruption that is poisoning the Great Goldpan River. Rainwater seeps through the blighted soil, carrying the black sap into the streams that feed the river, slowly poisoning the fish, the animals, and ultimately, the drinking water of Macridi. The forest's fey have fled this area entirely, leaving it to the undead and the maddened plants.

The blight is not merely a physical phenomenon; it is a living entity. It hungers for destruction, and it actively spreads. Trees have been known to grow appendages that mimic human arms, reaching out to strangle travelers who stray too close to the camp's borders. The deeper one goes into Reiver's Right, the more the air itself feels like a physical weight, pressing against the mind and driving intruders to madness.

3. The Transformed Loggers

The fate of the loggers who worked at Reiver's Right is the camp's most horrifying secret. They did not die; they were transformed. When the blight struck, it didn't just poison the soil; it altered the flesh of the workers, merging them with the trees. The men are now blighted treants—sentient, grieving, wooden abominations that patrol the camp. Their bodies are fused with bark and roots, but their faces remain permanently etched in expressions of silent agony. They weep black sap from their eyes and scream through wooden throats.

These blighted treants are not mindless zombies; they retain a fragment of their human memories. They scream for help, beg for a quick death, and offer clues to the nature of the corruption that destroyed them. Because of this, fighting them is deeply morally challenging. They are still, in some way, victims of the Kalistocracy's greed.

One of the most prominent of these tragic figures is the missing foreman the party was hired to find, a man named Hendrick. He was the one who oversaw the digging that awakened the curse. He now stands fused at the heart of the blight, continuously weeping and holding a rusted ledger—the Logging Guild's records of the illegal trees that were cut. He will beg the party to kill him and take the ledger back to Macridi.

GM Note: The party can either fight the treants and destroy them, or attempt to talk to them. If they can break the curse, they may be able to find the ledger without a fight, but doing so will require making a significant sacrifice to the ancient fey magic.

4. The Ancient Underbelly

The true source of the blight lies beneath the camp. When the loggers dug down to expand the quarry, they broke into the vast, forgotten catacombs of the Macridi Blade people. This ancient Kellid civilization once traded with the fey, and they built their power on blood magic and bargains with the deepest, darkest forces of the First World. Their most sacred artifact is the Blackened Blade, a massive obsidian sword that acts as the anchor of the curse.

The blade is buried at the exact center of the blight, fused with the roots of the ancient tree that now serves as the heart of Reiver's Right. It was placed there by the ancient warlord who founded the camp, and it is the reason the blight is so potent. To destroy the blight, the party must destroy or retrieve the Blackened Blade.

However, the blade is guarded by a monstrous guardian—a Wood Wraith. This creature is the amalgamation of the forest's rage, the ancient curse, and the souls of a thousand slaughtered trees. It resembles a horned stag with antlers of petrified blood, and it can summon the spirits of the dead loggers to fight by its side. The Wood Wraith is the mouthpiece of the forest, and it is absolutely merciless.

5. The Pale Hand and Blackened Blade

The symbol of the pale hand and blackened blade found at the Desolation Blade Mounts is deeply connected to Reiver's Right. It is the ancient crest of the Macridi Blade culture, signifying that the sword acts as the hand of a dark god. The arrival of these symbols around the forest is not a coincidence; it is a prophecy. The blight is a symptom of a much larger ancient awakening.

The Blackened Blade holds the key to this mystery. It is an artifact of immense power, capable of consuming the life force of whatever it cuts. It was created in the First World and given to the Kellids as a gift by a power that demanded the return of the blade in exchange for infinite wealth. By awakening the blade, the loggers have begun to draw the attention of this ancient power, which is now pulling the entire forest into the world of the fey.

If the party retrieves the blade, they will be given a terrible choice: keep it for its immense power, destroy it to end the curse, or return it to the depths of the Desolation Blade Mounts where it was meant to be buried forever. This choice will echo throughout the entire campaign and into Acts 2, 3, and 4.

Immediate Danger: The blight is spreading westward toward Macridi. If the party does not destroy the heart of Reiver's Right, the Blackjackets of Macridi will have no choice but to burn the entire forest to the ground to save the town, causing an ecological catastrophe and triggering a full-scale war with the fey.
  • The Rusted Ledger: Hendrick's ledger contains the complete history of every illegal cut, including the names of the Kalistocrats who ordered them. This evidence can be used to blackmail the Guildmaster or bring down the entire Bureaucracy in Kerse.
  • The Signet Ring: A silver ring inlaid with the crest of the Logging Guild, found in the roots of a blighted tree. It belongs to the missing foreman.
  • The Blackened Blade: A powerful +1 Keen Obsidian Sword. However, it is cursed to slowly drain the user's life force and eventually turn them into a blighted tree. It is highly resistant to physical damage and must be destroyed with magical fire.
  • Ancient Kellid Coinage: A hoard of obsidian and gold coins found in the catacombs below. They are incredibly valuable but weigh heavily on the soul of anyone who carries them without making a blood sacrifice.
