New Macridi

New Macridi: The Engineering Marvel

Where the rushing currents of Profit's Flow meet the broad waters of the Great Goldpan stands one of modern Druma's most remarkable settlements: New Macridi. The three-island district was founded in 4720 AR, only one year after the Blight ended. The disaster had left Macridi shaken, divided, and uncertain of its future, and the rebuilding that followed quickly became about more than replacing what had been lost. Many residents wanted a project capable of bringing the surviving communities together and giving the region a visible symbol of recovery.

The opportunity came during that first year of reconstruction. Dwarven investigators studying the damaged riverlands uncovered evidence of an ancient Tar Taargadth engineering method capable of stabilizing and raising enormous works within violently moving water. The discovery offered a solution that had seemed impossible only months before. Combined with the growing desire to reunify Macridi after the disaster, it gave merchants, laborers, engineers, river workers, craftsmen, and investors a common undertaking around which to rebuild.

The dwarves did not build New Macridi themselves. Human engineers, masons, laborers, merchants, and investors transformed the recovered principles into an ambitious new settlement. Before construction began, however, Macridi's leaders renewed and extended the Oath of Everlasting Friendship, the long-standing accord between the people of Macridi and the fey powers of the Palakar.

Under the Oath, the new works could rise at the confluence so long as the rivers continued to flow freely, the surrounding forest was not recklessly consumed, and older places, sacred boundaries, and living systems protected by the fey remained undisturbed. New Macridi was therefore founded not simply through wealth and engineering, but through a deliberate partnership between human ambition and the ancient powers already present in the region.

The islands themselves are the marvel. Rather than simply building upon existing shoals, human engineers adapted the newly recovered dwarven principles to raise and reinforce three enormous platforms within the confluence. Interlocking stoneworks, buried anchor structures, and immense foundation works stabilize the islands against the competing currents of the two rivers. Channels were deliberately preserved between them, allowing the water to continue through the settlement while concentrating portions of the current where its force could be put to useful work. The result reflects a central principle of Tar Taargadth engineering: great works need not merely resist the natural world when they can instead be designed to move with it.

The primary commercial challenge was the sheer velocity of the confluence, which could sweep valuable timber past Macridi or smash entire rafts against the rocky banks. New Macridi's builders answered with a massive timber-and-stone boom extending into the mouth of the Great Goldpan. Anchored to the engineered islands and supported by dwarven-inspired works beneath the waterline, the boom catches raw darkwood logs drifting down Profit's Flow and gradually deflects them from the strongest current into a calm collection basin beside the western island.

Founding of New Macridi.

The Blight ended in 4719 AR. During the following year, dwarven investigators recovered principles from surviving Tar Taargadth works while the people of Macridi searched for a way to rebuild and reunify. Those developments came together in 4720 AR, when construction of New Macridi began under the renewed protections of the Oath of Everlasting Friendship.

Legacy of Tar Taargadth.

New Macridi began with a dwarven discovery, not a dwarven construction project. Investigators studying the damaged riverlands identified surviving Tar Taargadth works and recovered enough of their underlying principles to demonstrate that permanent structures could be raised safely within the confluence. Human builders then adapted those discoveries on an enormous scale. New Macridi is therefore a distinctly modern human settlement built upon ancient dwarven knowledge and made possible through cooperation with the fey of the Palakar.

Hydraulic Infrastructure: The Sawmill Island & Waterwheels.

Once logs are funneled into the sheltered western basin, they are drawn directly into the massive Sawmill Yard. Flanked by the West Waterwheel and expansive Lumber Docks, heavy industrial winches haul timber from the water to be squared, processed, and stacked. The channels between New Macridi's islands concentrate the river current against enormous waterwheels whose power drives gang saws, hoists, pumps, and other machinery throughout the district. Raw trunks entering from the north can emerge as valuable darkwood planks ready for shipment without ever leaving the engineered river complex.

Connected by broad stone arched bridges, New Macridi's central and eastern islands house the civic and commercial heart of the district. The central island is anchored by the grand dome of the Temple of the Confluence and a bustling Market Square, guarded by fortified gatehouses and the Town Watch. Across the bridge, the eastern island hosts the Merchant Quarter, Guildmaster's Manor, and the lively Gold Spike Tavern, overlooking sprawling warehouses and the eastern Barge Docks where finished goods begin their journey downriver toward Kerse.

Despite its monumental appearance, New Macridi is extraordinarily young. Many of the engineers, laborers, merchants, river pilots, and negotiators who participated in its founding are still active in the region. Construction ledgers, engineering diagrams, correspondence with dwarven advisors, and copies of the Oath negotiations are not distant historical records but documents produced within living memory. Some of the original Tar Taargadth fragments are still preserved as well, while scholars and engineers continue to debate how much of the ancient engineering was truly understood and how much the builders learned through experimentation.

That recent history remains central to New Macridi's identity. The settlement was conceived during a moment when rebuilding required cooperation between groups that had often competed before the Blight. Old Macridi families, merchants, craftsmen, river workers, dwarven advisors, investors, and representatives of the fey all had different reasons for supporting the project, but the construction of New Macridi gave them a common purpose. The city became both an economic venture and a statement that Macridi would survive the disaster as a more unified community.

In stark contrast to Old Macridi across the river—where independent operators like Danum Karland process timber through historic, shore-bound mills—New Macridi developed rapidly into a tightly regulated commercial powerhouse. Blackjacket checkpoints monitor transit across its approaches, while merchant guilds and Kalistocrat interests control much of the trade passing through its docks and yards. Yet that prosperity remains bound to the settlement's founding compromises. The river must keep flowing, the forest cannot be treated as limitless, and the Oath of Everlasting Friendship remains part of the legal and cultural foundation upon which New Macridi was built.

Now, only a few years after its founding, strange black sap has begun arriving from upriver. New Macridi's booms, channels, mills, and protected basins were designed to master floods, currents, and commerce, not a corruption moving through living timber. Residents have begun looking back toward the dwarven discoveries and the terms of the Oath, wondering whether the agreements that made New Macridi possible contain warnings that its rapid growth has begun to overlook.

Standing on the stone bridges of New Macridi, one can hear the perpetual thunder of water beneath ancient-inspired arches, the slow turning of immense wheels, and the rhythmic clatter of saws. The foundations carry the ingenuity of Tar Taargadth, the stonework still bears the hands of the settlement's first builders, and beneath it all the two rivers continue to run according to the Oath of Everlasting Friendship that made the city possible.
