Mammon: The Argent Prince

Mammon: The Argent Prince
A Theological & Planar Primer on the Archdevil of Greed

1. Lore & Nature of the Lord of Avarice

Mammon, known as the Argent Prince, the Count of Avarice, and the Open Hand, is the Archdevil ruling Erebus, the Third Layer of Hell. He embodies the corruptive, consuming nature of greed, wealth, and material obsession. Once an extraordinarily handsome angel of high status, Mammon betrayed the heavens out of sheer lust for personal accumulation and divine riches. During the celestial war, his hubris led to a humiliating defeat: he was utterly crushed into a pool of molten gold by the Archangel Gabriel.

Reformed in the fires of Hell, Asmodeus trapped Mammon within a hideous, bloated form—a vast, serpentine monster forged from liquid gold, precious gems, and fused coinage. His top half resembles a massive, weeping monstrosity of molten metal, while his lower body is a shimmering, scaled snake formed from countless melted coins. Unending pain and insatiable hunger drive his eternal quest to hoard every piece of currency, soul, and artifact across the multiverse.

2. The Third Layer: Erebus

Mammon rules over Erebus, Hell's vast subterranean vault and counting house. Erebus is a endless cavern system of jagged black stone, gargantuan gold vaults, and rivers of boiling liquid coin. It is where the soul-currency of Hell is cataloged, weighed, and stored. Millions of damned souls, transformed into living gold coins or encrusted statue-servants, spend eternity in endless counting lines under the merciless whips of Osyluth accountants and pit fiend overseers.

At the center of Erebus lies the Cryo-Vault of the Argent Prince, a monumental fortress built from hollowed-out mountains of solid platinum. Here, Mammon slithers through mountains of coin, bathing in molten gold to soothe his eternal agony while constantly auditing the ledgers of Hell.

3. Religious Overview & Cults

Attribute Details
Title The Argent Prince, The Count of Avarice, The Open Hand, Lord of Erebus
Domains Evil, Greed, Law, Trickery
Subdomains Devil, Deception, Avarice, Trade
Favored Weapon Shortsword (or Heavy Flail)
Unholy Symbol A heavy golden coin stamped with a weeping, double-faced serpent or a coin melting through a palm
Sacred Colors Gold, Silver, and Emerald Green
Cultic Operations: Cults of Mammon thrive in wealthy civil societies, corporate boardrooms, and merchant guilds where legal loop-holes allow the ruthless exploitation of the poor. His worshippers include corrupt bankers, predatory lenders, desperate gamblers, and Kalistocratic heretics who secretly seek infinite infernal credit.

4. Infiltration of Mortal Lands

Unlike more overt warlike fiends, Mammon’s presence in nations like Druma, Cheliax, and Tiamat-backed trade hubs is insidious. His cultists rarely wear dark robes; instead, they wear pristine tailored suits and silk vests. They operate secretive financial societies, such as the infamous Society of the Golden Hand, using extortion, predatory contracts, and black-market soul-trafficking to buy up municipal debts and natural resources.

In places like the Palakar Forest, Mammon's agents covertly sponsor illicit logging operations or bribe frontier officials, seeking to turn pristine natural abundance into cold, hard currency. They believe that every tree, stone, and soul has an exact monetary value—and that buying the world piece by piece is the ultimate act of worship.

5. Infernal Boons & Cultist Abilities

Devoted followers of the Argent Prince who swear pacts of avarice receive insidious infernal blessings that aid in trade, subversion, and combat:

  • Touch of Midas: Worshippers can magically alter metals, transmute mundane iron into glittering fool's gold to scam rivals, or harden their skin into a metallic sheath (+2 item bonus to AC).
  • Avaricious Gaze: Cultists can sense the exact net worth, hidden valuables, and deepest financial desperation of any creature they look upon.
  • Gilded Curse: High priests can inflict a terrifying curse, causing an enemy's blood to turn to heavy molten gold, dealing persistent fire and bludgeoning damage while slowing their movement.

6. Campaign Hooks & Secrets

  • The Golden Hand Contract: A local merchant house in Macridi has secretly taken a massive loan from an agent of Mammon. Now that payments are due, the debt-collectors are demanding payment in soul-contracts or rare fey darkwood heartwood.
  • The Melted Coinage: Tainted coins bearing Mammon’s weeping serpent symbol begin circulating through local taverns. Anyone who holds the coins for too long becomes overwhelmed by irrational, violent greed.
  • Vault of the Weeping Prince: An ancient dwarven vault beneath the Five Kings Mountains was corrupted by Mammonic infernalists centuries ago. Opening it risks releasing a flood of molten, animated coin-constructs upon the region.
