Scene 5: The Hollow Vein Safehouse
Scene Overview
Scene 4 — The Hollow Vein Safehouse
The survivors reach an abandoned ore-processing chamber hidden behind a collapsed mine face. The Hollow Vein is barely a safehouse: two pressure rooms, a medical alcove, a water tank, a shielded transmitter, and a freight lift that has not moved in years. It is nevertheless the first place since the betrayal where nobody is actively shooting at the crew.
Use this scene to release the pressure, account for the survivors, let the twins speak for themselves, review evidence, and make the party's new status clear. The act ends when the group agrees on how to leave Daegox-4.
Read Aloud
Read Aloud — The Hollow Vein
The collapsed mine face opens only after Rook transmits a code. Stone rolls aside on hidden tracks, revealing a narrow pressure tunnel and a row of old work lamps.
Inside, the air is warm and tastes faintly of metal. Bedrolls cover the floor around a portable heater. Someone has painted the Free Daegox symbol over an abandoned corporate safety sign.
For several seconds, nobody speaks. Weapons lower. Helmets open. The twins sit together against the wall, close enough that loose dust circles their boots but nothing breaks.
Rook looks over whoever made it.
“All right,” she says. “Now we count the living. Then I tell you how badly this went.”
Safehouse Sequence
Running the Safehouse
| Beat | Purpose | Key Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Triage | Treat injuries, remove the last inert restraint fragments, and repair environmental gear. | Full rest becomes possible; the party recovers before Act 2. |
| 2. Count the FFs | Name the survivors who mattered during the escape. | The active specialist becomes a recurring supporting NPC. |
| 3. Rook's confession | Explain the failed rescue and what the FFs did not know. | The party decides whether Rook is an ally, employer, prisoner, or temporary necessity. |
| 4. The twins choose | Kaelen and Vanya state that they will not return to custody and will not be traded. | Trust rises if the party recognizes their agency. |
| 5. Review the evidence | Connect Handler Ilex Mora, Helix Meridian, and the prison experiments. | Evidence creates leverage and objectives in Act 2. |
| 6. Pick the planetary escape | Introduce the Ghost Path, the Force Path, and any route-specific lead. | The party commits to Act 2 and reaches level 2 by milestone. |
Recovery and Level Advancement
The Hollow Vein is secure enough for an 8-hour rest. The FFs have basic food, air, water, and tools, though supplies are strained if more than six non-PC survivors arrive.
Recommended milestone: Advance every PC to level 2 after the group commits to the planetary escape plan at the end of this scene.
Standard XP: A typical group should arrive with roughly 850–990 XP, depending on route and optional accomplishments. Characters below 1,000 XP keep their exact total and should reach level 2 after the first major accomplishment in Act 2. A GM who wants level 2 immediately should use the milestone rather than inventing a large catch-up award.
Act 1 Accomplishment XP
These awards are checked at the safehouse. Do not award the same accomplishment twice if it was already granted earlier.
| Accomplishment | XP | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Break the prison's active claim on the twins by neutralizing the subdermal restraint system | 80 XP | Major story award. |
| Bring both twins to the Hollow Vein alive and recognize their right to choose what happens next | 80 XP | Major story award; increase Trust by 1, maximum 3. |
| Preserve a viable Free Daegox cell: Rook survives, or at least two other FFs survive | 80 XP | Major story award. |
| Recover usable evidence tying Helix Meridian or Ilex Mora to the purge | 30 XP | Moderate story award; Evidence increases by 1. |
| Rescue prisoners, mine workers, or maintenance personnel during the escape | 30 XP | Award once, even if several groups were rescued. |
| Keep Twins Trust at 2 or higher without coercing a resonance surge | 30 XP | Moderate story award. |
| Commit to a workable plan for leaving Daegox-4 | 80 XP | Major story award and formal end of Act 1. |
| Recover a small but meaningful item, message, or stranded survivor not covered above | 10 XP | Minor story award, at most twice during Act 1. |
Hollow Vein Safehouse
| Area | Use | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| H1. Pressure Entry | Decontamination, suit repair, concealed outer door. | The cycle takes 3 minutes and admits six Medium creatures at a time. |
| H2. Common Chamber | Rest, debrief, food, and route planning. | Crowded if more than twelve total survivors arrive. |
| H3. Medical Alcove | Healer's tools, two treatment beds, restraint-anchor scanner. | No automated healing system remains. |
| H4. Shielded Transmitter | Contact other FF cells and review recovered evidence. | Each long transmission risks increasing Network Heat. |
| H5. Dead Freight Lift | Potential future exit or vehicle route. | Requires substantial repair during Act 2. |
| H6. Supply Cage | Basic batteries, ration packs, filters, and industrial tools. | Stock depends on route salvage and survivor count. |
Carry the Route Forward
| Route | Safehouse Result | Act 2 Hook |
|---|---|---|
| Exhaust Gate | Warden core or relay signature can identify a corporate command channel. | Direct route to a Helix listening post; Network Heat +1 unless tracking was blinded. |
| Coolant Spine | Rescued workers can restore the water system. | Ghost Path starts with Network Heat –1 if the route was sealed. |
| Ore Transit | Industrial salvage improves the freight lift and shelter. | Freight manifest reveals an unregistered landing pad or supply convoy. |
