Area W3 — Roadside Shrine (Cultist Secret Way)

A small, weathered stone shrine sits nestled in a bend of the path, its roof cracked and overgrown with creeping ivy. A forgotten Pharasmin symbol is carved into the altar, though the surface is chipped, freshly stained, and surrounded by muddy boot prints. By default, this area presents a lingering, non-combat encounter with a ghostly echo. However, beneath the altar lies a secret bypass into the Ossuary used regularly by the cultists.

1. The Traveler's Echo (Standard Encounter)

The Scene: As the PCs approach the altar, a translucent, ghostly figure of an ancient traveler manifests, repeating a loop of its final moments. It paces near the shrine, clutching its chest before pointing toward the northern stairs (Area W5) and whispering a warning before fading away.

  • Roleplay / Lore Clue: The echo whispers: "The stone circle above holds the seal... but the key has been forgotten." This provides the party with a hint for solving the puzzle at Area W5.
  • Pharasmin Blessing: A PC who kneels and offers a brief prayer at the altar (or succeeds at a DC 18 Religion check) receives a minor blessing: a +1 status bonus to Will saves against fear effects for the next 1 hour.

2. Secret Cultist Entrance & Veil-Shard Trap

The cultists have converted a hollow space beneath the shrine into a hidden backdoor entrance leading directly down into the Ossuary below, bypassing the puzzle at Area W5 entirely.

  • Easy to Spot (DC 15 Perception / Survival): Recent cultist activity leaves obvious clues. Heavy boot tracks in the mud lead straight up to the altar, and deep scuff marks line a subtle seam in the stone base. Spotting the secret door and its jagged iron keyhole requires only a routine check.
  • Heavy Locking Mechanism (DC 31 Skill Check ~10% Success): While finding the door is easy, the lock is a crude, brutal piece of custom ironwork engineered specifically for the cult's jagged pendants.
    • Picking the Lock: Requires a DC 31 Thievery check (an Incredible DC for a Level 4 party, representing roughly a 10% chance to open).
    • Forcing the Door: Requires a DC 30 Athletics check to pry open the heavy stone slab (Hardness 10, HP 40, BT 20).
  • Trap — Shard Pulse & Echo Aggression: Embedded deep beneath the doorframe lies a small, fragmented veil-shard that powers the lock's wards. The party cannot reach or disable this shard until the secret door is completely opened.
    • Trigger: Any unsuccessful Thievery check to pick the lock causes the tumbler to jam hard into the warding mechanism, causing the hidden shard to flare with a sharp, pale-blue pulse of energy.
    • Effect: The surge immediately corrupts the local planar boundary. Any translucent echoes present in the area flare blue, drop their passive loops, and turn to attack all non-echo creatures (the party). Use 1–2× Thornwick Echoes (Creature 3) if triggered.
  • The Cultist Key (Automatic Bypass): All cultists wear a crudely forged iron key around their necks disguised as a jagged pendant. Inserting one of these keys turns the tumblers smoothly, opening the door safely without triggering the shard's ward pulse.

3. Cultist Stash & Supply Cache

Tucked behind a loose slab in the rear wall of the shrine is a hidden compartment where cultists restock before descending into the depths.

  • Finding the Cache (DC 16 Perception / Survival): Heavy footprints lead around the back of the shrine to a loose slab smeared with muddy handprints.
  • Cache Contents:
    • Supplies: 5 days of dried rations and 2 full waterskins.
    • Healing / Consumables:Minor Healing Potions, 1× Lesser Antiplague.
    • Light Sources: 4 torches and 1 flask of oil.
    • Lore Clue: A scrap of parchment bearing crude charcoal drawings of the standing stones at Area W5, marked with an 'X' over the primary seal.
