Area W5 — The Planar Seal of the Boneyard

At the top of the ridge, the forest opens into a wide, ceremonial slate terrace surrounded by four tall, carved basalt monoliths. In the center lies a carved stone map of the Great Beyond depicting the Inner Sphere, the River of Souls, and the Boneyard at the hub of the Outer Sphere. Four deep indentation basins sit empty around the central Boneyard spire, and nearby stone pedestals hold brass token-weights etched with planar seals (Elemental Earth, Vitality/Positive, Void/Negative, and the Astral River).

This seal was carved by Pharasmin monks to bind the entrance to the Ossuary below. Opening the stairs without the Cultist Key (from Area W3) requires aligning the path of a soul's journey according to cosmic law.

Cosmological Lore & Puzzle Mechanics (Non-Rotating)

The Core Logic: The puzzle represents the River of Souls—the path a mortal soul takes from its origin in the Material Plane to its final judgment by Pharasma in the Boneyard. To unlock the seal, the PCs must place four heavy brass planar tokens into their correct sequence basins (Basins I through IV):

  • Basin I (Origin / Material): Requires the Elemental Earth / Material Token (Physical birth).
  • Basin II (Spark of Life): Requires the Vitality / Positive Energy Token (Creation and mortal spark).
  • Basin III (Transition & Mortality): Requires the Void / Negative Energy Token (Mortal death and passage).
  • Basin IV (The Journey / Astral Conduit): Requires the Astral River Token (The flow along the River of Souls into the Spire).

Act 1 Hints & Lore Connections

If the party collected clues during previous encounters, apply the following bonuses and deductions:

  • Sister Mirela's Teachings (Thornwick Church): Mirela’s sermons on Pharasma emphasize that "Life is given by light, taken by shadow, and carried across the silver river to the Great Spire." Players who recall this automatically deduce the correct placement for Basins II and IV.
  • Area W3 Echo Clue: The traveler's echo whispering about the "forgotten key" grants a +2 circumstance bonus to all Religion and Religion-Lore checks attempted here.
  • Area W3 Cultist Parchment: The charcoal sketch explicitly shows the Void Token placed before the Astral River Token, granting 1 automatic success in either puzzle variant.

GM Selector: Choose Your Difficulty Variant

Variant A: The Threshold Sequence (Easy / Medium)

Reward: Minor Story XP (30 XP)

Mechanic: Each basin is inscribed with a simple Pharasmin liturgy stanza. Players must place the correct token into each basin to complete the verse. A single successful check reveals the entire remaining sequence.

  • Religion (DC 18) or Planar Lore (DC 16): Interprets the liturgical inscriptions accurately on the first attempt.
  • Perception (DC 18): Notices weight-grooves beneath the basins indicating which token fits where by physical weight.
Variant B: The Weight of Judgment (Medium / Hard)

Reward: Moderate Story XP (80 XP)

Mechanic: The basins are linked by subterranean balance-counterweights. Inserting a token into an incorrect basin locks that token in place and drains 1 point of energy from the seal, forcing the party to solve a 3-stage logical deduction using planar cosmology.

  • Stage 1 — Deciphering the Inner Sphere (DC 22 Religion / DC 20 Esoteric Lore): Identifies the relationship between the Material Plane and the Positive/Negative energy envelopes.
  • Stage 2 — Mapping the Astral Current (DC 21 Arcana / DC 19 Boneyard Lore): Correctly routes the Astral River through the Outer Sphere alignment.
  • Stage 3 — Balancing the Spire (DC 20 Athletics or Crafting): Manually resets a jammed counterweight lever if a wrong placement was made.

Planar Backlash Hazard

Placing an incorrect token or failing a skill check by 5 or more disrupts the local planar ley line, causing a surge of dissonant void energy from the nearby veil-tear:

  • Cosmic Repulsion Pulse: All creatures standing on the slate terrace take 2d10 void damage (DC 20 Fortitude save for half damage; on a critical failure, the creature is also pushed 10 feet back and knocked prone).
  • Echo Manifestation: If a second failure occurs, a hostile Thornwick Echo (Creature 3) coalesces from the gray mist, attacking until defeated.

Unlocking the Descent

When the tokens are set in their proper cosmological sequence:

  • The Unsealing: The central Boneyard spire glows with a calm, silvery luminescence. The heavy stone map sinks with a grinding stone echo, sliding into the terrace wall to reveal a wide, ancient staircase descending into the dark chill of the Ossuary of Forgotten Swords (Act 2).
  • Cultist Key Bypass: If the party used the secret cultist key from Area W3, they emerge into the stairwell directly beneath this stone map, completely bypassing the puzzle, checks, and backlash risks.
