Area O2 — The Hall of Blades

The passage opens into a circular chamber nearly sixty feet across. Every inch of the stone floor is crowded with rusted swords driven point-first into the rock, their worn hilts rising like a forest of iron. Time has claimed almost all of them. Only a single blade at the chamber's center still gleams as though it had been forged yesterday. Beyond it, the northern passage is blocked by a shimmering barrier of magical force.

A careful examination reveals that the swords form Pharasma's spiral. A successful DC 18 Perception check or DC 16 Religion check reveals seven distinct breaks in the pattern. Each gap is marked by an ancient inscription corresponding to one of the Seven Thresholds of the Soul.

The Puzzle: The Seven Thresholds of the Soul

To seal the spiral, the heroes must match each milestone of the soul's journey with clues hidden in the chamber's alcoves, locate the corresponding named sword hidden among the iron forest, and seat it in its proper place:

  • 1. Birth (The Gap of the First Breath): Requires the Shortsword of Novice Kaelen, buried hilt-deep near the entry archway. Identified via a DC 15 Religion or Medicine check (engraved with a Pharasmin midwife's blessing and a fresh swaddling knot on the pommel).
  • 2. Life (The Gap of the Mortal Labor): Requires the Bastard Sword of Shield-Bearer Vane, tucked into a pile of shattered armor in the western alcove. Identified via a DC 16 Crafting or Warfare Lore check (showing decades of heavy repairs, notch-marks from battle, and a well-worn leather grip).
  • 3. Fate (The Gap of the Unseen Thread): Requires the Stiletto of the Quiet Sentry, held in the skeletal hands of a seated statue in the eastern nook. Identified via a DC 17 Perception check (bearing no heraldry or edge marks, save for a single silver thread wrapped around the guard).
  • 4. Death (The Gap of the Final Severing): Requires the Glaive-Blade of the Penitent, cast carelessly into a heap of rusted scabbards in the central field. Identified via a DC 18 Religion or Perception check (a heavy, executioner-style blade dulled deliberately at the point to symbolize the absolute end of breath).
  • 5. Judgment (The Gap of the Scales): Requires the Greatsword of Sir Alden the Heirless, resting across two rusted iron pegs on the south wall. Identified via a DC 18 Society or History Lore check (pommel shaped into balanced brass scales, bearing the motto "Naked before the Lady").
  • 6. Transit (The Gap of the Gray River): Requires the Arming Sword of Lady Ysolde, lying in a dry stone basin under a slow water drip. Identified via a DC 16 Arcana or Occultism check (the blade hums softly when held near water, its steel faint and translucent like river mist).
  • 7. Rebirth / Afterlife (The Gap of the Eternal Greatness): Requires the Flamberg of the Hospitaller, wedged point-down into a crack in the northern altar. Identified via a DC 16 Religion check (the crossguard is sculpted as a phoenix rising from a spiral, soaked in ancient sanctified oils that refuse to dry).

Blade Storm Trap — Hazard 3

[Magical] [Trap]

Trigger: A character places a sword into the incorrect gap in the spiral or turns the central blade while a break remains.

Effect: The misplaced sword shatters in a flash of spectral force, triggering a violent spray of flying iron in a 15-foot cone facing the triggerer.

Response: All creatures in the cone must attempt a DC 20 Reflex save.

  • Critical Success: The creature takes no damage.
  • Success: The creature takes 1d8+2 slashing damage.
  • Failure: The creature takes 2d8+4 slashing damage.
  • Critical Failure: The creature takes 4d8+8 slashing damage and takes 1d6 persistent bleed damage.

Reset: The trap magic settles after 1 minute, resetting the central blade for another attempt.

When the final blade is set into the gap of Rebirth and the central blade turned, the magical barrier dissolves with a low metallic hum. The pristine crusader's sword at the center loosens from the stone floor, no longer bound to its ancient vigil. It is a +1 striking ghost touch longsword.
