The Sootbound Quarters
The servants’ quarters are arranged with unsettling precision. Boots stand beneath empty bunks, cups sit beside cold washbasins, and a row of coats hangs as if its owners will return after the next bell. A thin layer of soot covers everything except the paths worn by figures that no longer leave footprints.
This room shows how the mansion’s routines continued after its people were gone. The party can learn who worked below, find a safe place to rest briefly, and decide whether to interrupt the repeating routine or observe it.

| Feature | Contents and use |
|---|---|
| Bunk row | Seven bunks are occupied only by folded uniforms. The eighth contains a soot-stained name tag and a note warning staff not to answer the furnace bell. |
| Meal table | Each place setting is arranged for a meal that never happened. The final place holds a tin cup with warm ash inside. |
| Service bell | Pulling the bell summons a silent routine: a spectral servant crosses the room, points toward S1-E8, and vanishes at the wall. |
| Laundry line | Behind the hanging coats is a narrow service passage. Its wall marks show that workers used it to avoid the flooded machinery. |
| Caretaker’s locker | Contains spare keys, chalk, a wrapped lantern, and a sealed letter describing a “black heartbeat” beneath the furnace. |
Haunted routine
If the party steals or breaks an object, the room repeats the action around them: a cup falls, a coat turns, or a bell rings. The manifestation is warning and pressure, not an automatic attack.
Useful route: The service passage gives the party a quieter way toward the storehouse and can be used as a fallback when the main basement mechanism becomes dangerous.
