The Black Furnace
The deepest chamber is built around a furnace that has no visible flame. Its iron shell is blacker than the surrounding stone, and a slow pulse moves through its seams like a heartbeat under skin. Ash falls upward from the floor toward the chimney. Every sound returns from inside the furnace a moment later, slightly changed.
The Black Furnace is the mansion’s buried engine and the source of the lower level’s unnatural heat. It is not required to open the Ash Lift, but it explains the fire’s persistence and gives the party a dangerous optional route to the truth beneath the estate.

|---|---|
| Furnace mouth | A sealed iron aperture bears the twelve ash-signs. It opens only when the machine is active or when someone forces the emergency release. |
| Pressure gauges | Three cracked gauges show water pressure, heat, and “memory.” Adjusting one changes the room’s sound and can reveal a hidden maintenance mark. |
| Ash throat | The chimney pulls loose ash upward. A character who looks into it sees the mansion’s rooms as brief ember silhouettes, including the route to the upper landing. |
| Buried engine housing | Bolts around the housing can be loosened with the storehouse repair kit. Inside is a blackened gear and the sealed ember referenced by the inventory board. |
| Emergency release | Breaking the red chain vents the chamber and lowers the furnace pressure, but it also announces the party throughout the basement. |
Deepest danger
When the party interferes with the engine, the furnace answers with heat, ash, and distorted voices. Use a moderate hazard or bring the Drowned Ash Guardian upward only if the party’s actions justify escalation; the chamber should remain a dangerous choice, not a mandatory fight.
Optional truth: The sealed ember is not the source of the mansion’s haunting. It is a surviving piece of the household’s final command, and carrying it forward gives the party leverage over the upper levels.
