The Soot Archive
Shelves lean beneath a ceiling filmed with soot. Most ledgers have fused into black blocks, but a few drawers remain dry behind a warped wooden screen. Every time the party disturbs the dust, tiny ash flakes rise and settle in the shape of dates, names, and unfinished sentences.
The archive preserves the household’s practical memory: deliveries, repairs, staff rosters, and fire-watch notes. It is not a complete history, but it gives the party a way to distinguish what was destroyed by accident from what someone deliberately removed.

| Feature | Contents and use |
|---|---|
| Fused ledger shelves | Most records are unreadable, but the surviving spines identify the mansion’s intake, chapel, servants’ wing, and furnace maintenance routes. |
| Dry records drawer | Contains a partial staff roster and three fire-watch entries. One watch was signed after the household had already been evacuated. |
| Ash-written wall | When warmed by a lantern or spell, the wall reveals a repeated phrase: “the house was fed from below.” |
| Collapsed reading desk | Under the desk is a brass archive key and a charred floor plan with the furnace marked twice. |
| Ventilation grille | Warm air and a faint metallic rhythm come from behind the grille, pointing toward the Black Furnace. |
Clue: The false fire-watch entry proves that someone continued operating the lower mechanism after the evacuation.
