The Three Small Rifts
The rifts are not natural landmarks and they are not full portals. They are miniature planar apertures, built to admit a narrow influence from a neighbBrickomerg plane and then close before the pressure becomes dangerous. The mansion of Ash touches the Plane of Fire; the mansion of Glass touches the Plane of Air; and the mansion of Thorns touches the Plane of Earth.
Ash · Fire
The Ash rift gives off furnace heat, ember-light, and the occasional whisper of Ignan. It can pass a coal, a thread of flame, or a small fire elemental—never a creature large enough to simply walk through. The Ember Key was designed to stabilize its frame for a few breaths.
Glass · Air
The Glass rift appears as a vertical distortion in mirrored surfaces. It carries wind, distant voices, and flecks of charged dust. A careful traveler might send a note or hear a reply, but the opening is too narrow and unstable for ordinary passage.
Thorns · Earth
The Thorns rift pushes up roots, grit, and the smell of wet stone. It can admit a hand-sized mineral, a seed, or a crawling elemental fragment. Its pressure is strongest when someone makes a promise near the estate’s oldest roots.
The vanished siblings
Two brothers and their sister discovered how to make the miniature rifts. Odran Veyr built the frames, Pellan Veyr mapped the planar pressure, and Maelis Veyr learned how to close each aperture without tearing the mansion apart. Their work was practical, secretive, and never meant to create a road between worlds.
A hidden financier paid for their materials and field experiments. The financier is interested in the rifts because they offer controlled access to rare heat, clean wind, and deep-earth samples—resources that can be harvested without opening a dangerous full-sized gate. The siblings disappeared before they could finish their records. Only recently have the three Mansions been rediscovered, and the rifts have begun to open on their own.
Hooks
- A message arrives through the Glass rift in a voice that belongs to one of the missing siblings.
- The financier offers the party a reward for recovering the siblings’ field ledger, but conceals the fact that the ledger includes a method for widening the rifts.
- An Ember Fox near the Ash rift is not an invader; it is a small elemental that has learned to guard the last stable aperture.
- When all three rifts pulse together, something on the far side answers from the wrong plane.
