Area O4 — The Hunger's Lair

The tear here is not a slit but a wound — a ragged hole in reality through which the Gray bleeds. The air is cold enough to hurt. And in the center, coiled around the second shard like a serpent around an egg, is the Soul-Hunger.

It was once beautiful. Now it is a thing of frayed shadow and too many mouths, each whispering a different name. It does not attack immediately. It regards the party with something like recognition.

Selene's Moment of Clarity: If Sister Mirela is present (or if a party member speaks the name "Selene"), the creature pauses. For one round, it does not attack. It speaks, its voice a chorus:

"I knew you. I knew the light. I eat and eat and cannot stop. Please. The shard. Take it. Take it and run before I am hungry again."

Tactical Situation: The Soul-Hunger is a level 6 creature (extreme for level 4). However, if the party uses Selene's moment of clarity to grab the shard and flee, they avoid the fight entirely. If they choose to fight, the creature has:

  • Soul Drain: Ranged attack, 60 ft, DC 22 Fortitude or drained 1.
  • Consume Echo: Heals 20 HP when it "kills" an echo or summoned creature.
  • Phase: Can become incorporeal as a free action once per round.

Alternative Resolution: A party member can attempt to reach Selene with a powerful display of faith (Religion DC 28, 2 actions) or a heartfelt personal connection (Diplomacy DC 30 with a suitable backstory). Success causes Selene to turn on the shard, destroying it and herself in a burst of silver light. The tear seals. The party gains a major story award and Selene's gratitude (potentially useful in Act 3).
