Best Fit Furnishings

High-End Darkwood Crafting and Elite Furniture Workshop

The sweet, rich aroma of polished darkwood and fresh varnish fills this spacious workshop near Old Macridi's northern gate. Stacked high along the stone walls are seasoned planks of iron-hard timber, waiting to be shaped into grand dining tables, intricate cabinets, and gold-inlaid desks. The hall is strangely quiet despite the intense labor underway—assistants move silently between workbenches, communicating through rapid hand gestures so as not to disturb the master artisan at the center of the floor.

Best Fit Furnishings is renowned throughout Druma for producing the Inner Sea's most exquisite darkwood furniture. The shop is operated by Pheyess (N male elf sorcerer), a deaf master woodworker whose magical sensitivity to timber grain allows him to craft pieces of incredible beauty. Pheyess communicates via slate boards or precise hand signs. Recently, the shop has fallen under intense pressure: a high-ranking Kalistocratic Prophet from Kerse placed a massive, high-value order for darkwood furniture, but the recent arrival of blighted, oily logs has threatened to ruin Pheyess's reputation and business.

GM Note: Pheyess's Dilemma

Pheyess can immediately tell if a piece of wood is corrupted just by touch. He is terrified because the last batch of timber delivered from Karland's Sawmill contained hidden pockets of oily black rot. He needs clean darkwood desperately and suspects the lumber supply downriver is being intentionally sabotaged or infected.

Workshop Challenges

Challenge 1: Inspecting the Corrupted Timber

Primary CheckCrafting or Perception DC 18

Pheyess invites the party to examine a newly arrived load of darkwood logs that look pristine on the outside, but fracture violently under the chisel due to internal decay.

Critical Success The party pinpoints that the corruption spreads along the tree's vascular ring from a single subterranean taproot source, proving the tree was infected while alive in the ground rather than rotting post-harvest. Pheyess is deeply grateful for this proof and gifts the party a Wooden Shield with a Hardness Rune.
Success The party identifies that the internal rot is linked to the same oily black sap found in the riverways, confirming the blight is affecting standing timber across the region.
Failure The party fails to notice the subtle grain fracturing, wasting time and accidentally ruining a valuable darkwood plank during inspection.
Critical Failure The party accidentally strikes a pressurized pocket of blighted sap within the wood, spraying toxic residue across the workbench and ruining Pheyess's specialized carving tools.

Challenge 2: Placating the Kalistocratic Auditor

Primary CheckDeception, Diplomacy, or Society DC 17

An impatient auditor representing the Kerse Prophet arrives at the shop to inspect the progress of the darkwood order. The party must intervene to prevent the auditor from canceling the contract and levying ruinous financial penalties on Pheyess.

Critical Success The party uses flawless trade etiquette and legal reasoning to convince the auditor that the delay is caused by an official regional trade quarantine. The auditor grants a 30-day extension without penalty and leaves satisfied.
Success The party smooths over the auditor's temper, buying Pheyess a one-week grace period to secure clean timber from downriver.
Failure The auditor remains unimpressed and threatens to report Pheyess to the Assembly Institute for breach of contract.
Critical Failure The party insults the auditor's Kalistocratic piety, prompting him to immediately levy a heavy fine on the workshop and report the party to the Blackjackets.
Sidequest

Pheyess's Sacred Heartwood

Pheyess explains via slate board that to fulfill the Prophet's centerpiece order, he needs a single beam of uncorrupted ancient heartwood. He knows a forgotten lumber cache exists near Reiver's Right that was harvested before the blight began.

  • Objective: Locate the sealed dry-storage shed at Reiver's Right and recover the seasoned heartwood beam marked with Pheyess's personal artisan seal.
  • Reward: Pheyess crafts each party member a custom Darkwood Talisman (grants a +1 item bonus to saving throws against primal spells and plant-based hazards for 24 hours) and 30 gp.
