Scene 4 — Interview with Captain Aelar
Captain Aelar
The Hellknight's Testimony • Pathfinder 2e
Captain Aelar is a veteran Hellknight of the Order of the Godclaw. He stands rigid and tall in his polished armor, a stern, disciplined man in his forties. His face is a roadmap of scars earned in service to Cheliax—the most prominent one runs from his left temple to his jaw, a reminder of a battle he won but never forgets. His eyes are cold, analytical, the eyes of a man who has seen too much and trusts too little.
He meets you in the guard barracks of the Thrune estate, a room of bare stone and iron. There are no comforts here—only duty. He gestures to a chair, but does not sit himself. He is a man on edge, coiled like a spring.
Captain Aelar a calm voice, but with deep anger beneath it
"You are here about Darian Thrune. I was responsible for his security. I failed him."
His voice is calm, controlled—but beneath it, there is a deep anger. He blames himself for the murder, and the guilt has eaten away at him. As you speak with him, you sense that he knows more than he is saying.
Captain Aelar his voice dropping, a haunted edge creeping in
"The assassin was no mortal. I have fought demons, devils, and worse—but this creature was different. It moved like shadow, struck like lightning."
🔍 Observations
When you press him, he reveals several key details:
- The Assassin's Form: He saw the assassin briefly—a tall, gaunt figure wreathed in shadow, its movements unnatural, almost fluid. It did not walk; it flowed.
- An Inside Man: He believes there was an inside man in the palace—someone who provided access and information to the killer. He has been investigating on his own, but his superiors have blocked his inquiries.
- Fear for His Life: He fears for his life. He has been receiving threats—whispered warnings in the dark, shadows that move when they should not. He knows he is being watched.
- A Wound That Will Not Heal: He carries a wound from the night of the murder—a wound that refuses to heal, as if marked by something unnatural. He keeps it hidden beneath his armor.
Order of the Godclaw: The Hellknight order to which Aelar belongs. They worship a pantheon of five lawful deities—Iomedae, Torag, Abadar, Asmodeus, and Irori—and view law as the highest virtue. They are the most zealous of the Hellknight orders, and they will not forgive failure. Aelar's career—and possibly his life—hangs in the balance.
Captain Aelar his voice a low, urgent whisper
"Be careful. The truth you are seeking is a dangerous thing. I have seen men killed for asking questions like these. The conspiracy runs deeper than you know."
He turns away, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. The audience is over. He has said all he can—and perhaps more than he should.
🔍 Investigation Leads
🎭 The Inside Man
Aelar believes there was an accomplice within the palace. This suggests a conspiracy within House Thrune itself.
Conspiracy🌑 The Shadow Assassin
Aelar described the killer as "wreathed in shadow" and "no mortal." This confirms the involvement of a velstrac or shadow creature.
Velstrac🛡️ Aelar's Fear
He is terrified—and his fear is not for himself alone. He has seen the scope of the conspiracy, and he knows that anyone who uncovers the truth will be targeted.

📖 Description

He stands tall and rigid, his armor polished to a mirror shine despite the weight of disgrace that now hangs over him. He failed to protect Darian Thrune, and his reputation is ruined. He is angry — at himself and at the conspiracy he suspects.
His eyes are cold and analytical, the eyes of a man who has seen too much and trusts too little. He speaks in clipped, precise sentences, as if every word must earn its place. Beneath his stoic exterior, he is a man on the edge—desperate to redeem himself, but unsure who he can trust.
