⛧ The Shadow-That-Walks

The Shadow-That-Walks is an ancient velstrac of immense cunning and patience—a creature that has existed for millennia in the dark spaces between worlds. It is not merely a monster; it is a presence, a shadow that has haunted the political history of Cheliax since before the nation's founding. Its true name is unpronounceable in mortal tongues, a shriek of static and silence that exists only in the void of the Shadow Plane.

This velstrac is the architect of the conspiracy at the heart of The Twice-Damned Crown. It is the power behind the assassination of Darian Thrune, the manipulator of House Thrune's infernal contract, and the force that has been gathering the threads of shadow and politics for centuries. It is patient, intelligent, and utterly without mercy.

📜 The History of Velstracs

The velstracs (formerly known as kytons) are natives of the Shadow Plane—beings of pure shadow, pain, and obsession. They are not demons or devils, though they are often mistaken for them. They do not serve Hell or the Abyss; they serve only their own twisted pursuit of sensation and perfection through suffering.

According to ancient texts, the velstracs originated with the first debased thoughts of mortals. Divine beings found these thoughts so deplorable that they locked all velstracs away in Hell. But the creatures were too resilient—they escaped their infernal prison to the Netherworld, where they have thrived ever since. Their souls are forged from the most extreme masochistic or sadistic mortals, transformed through untold chambers of pain into creatures of shadow and torment.

The velstracs have no fixed leader, but they are organized into a brutal hierarchy of power and pain. At the top are the eremites—terrifying beings of mutilation and flesh-crafting—and below them a host of lesser velstracs, each seeking to ascend through suffering. The Shadow-That-Walks is an evangelist, a velstrac of considerable power that acts as a messenger and agent of the most powerful velstrac lords.

⛧ Velstrac Divinities

The most powerful velstracs are unique divinities known collectively as velstrac demagogues—creatures worshipped by mortals who seek to experience agonizing revelations and gain power through pain. The Shadow-That-Walks has been slowly cultivating a following in the Shadow District, offering knowledge and power to those willing to pay the price of suffering.

🌑 The Shadow-That-Walks — A Deeper Look

Origins

The Shadow-That-Walks was once a mortal Chelish noble during the early days of the Chelish Civil War. Desperate to save his family from ruin, he made a pact with a velstrac lord—a bargain that bound him to the Shadow Plane in exchange for the power to win the war. But the velstrac betrayed him, twisting his body and soul into a creature of shadow. The noble's name is lost to history, but his despair and rage have endured for over a century, transformed into a patient, malevolent intelligence.

Motives

The Shadow-That-Walks seeks to bind Cheliax to the Shadow Plane, creating a new realm of eternal twilight where shadow magic reigns supreme and mortals become playthings for velstracs. It believes that the nation's infernal contract with Hell is a limitation—a chain that must be broken so that a new, more interesting master can claim the nation's soul.

It has been manipulating House Thrune for generations, subtly guiding events toward this goal. The assassination of Darian Thrune was not an end—it was a beginning. With Darian dead, the velstrac can now exploit the chaos to seize control of the hidden infernal contract that binds Cheliax to Hell—and rewrite it in the shadow of its own power.

Personality & Methods

The Shadow-That-Walks is patient, intelligent, and utterly without emotion—except for a deep, abiding enjoyment of suffering. It does not hate; it finds hatred too crude and simple. Instead, it views mortals as toys, playthings to be manipulated, broken, and discarded. It speaks in whispers and riddles, never revealing its full plan until it is too late to stop.

It prefers to work through proxies and puppets—Chelish nobles, desperate informants, and corrupt officials who believe they are serving their own interests. It has a network of agents throughout Egorian, from the highest courts to the lowest dens of the Shadow District. It is always watching, always waiting.

⚔️ Velstrac Weaknesses

Good and Silver are the velstrac's greatest vulnerabilities. Weapons blessed with holy power or forged from silver can pierce its shadowy defenses. Additionally, velstracs are bound by truth—they cannot willingly speak a direct lie, though they are masters of omission and misdirection.

📖 Velstrac Lore — What Scholars Know

Origins & Transformation

The velstracs are native to the Netherworld, a realm of pure shadow that borders the Shadow Plane. They manifest from the souls of mortals who were consumed by extreme sadistic or masochistic desires in life—judged and sent to the Netherworld to be transformed. The process is slow and agonizing, the soul warped step by step through chambers of pain and obsession.

Hierarchy of Pain

The velstracs have a brutal hierarchy based on power and the capacity to inflict suffering:

  • Augurs: The lowest rank, barely sentient creatures of shadow and instinct.
  • Ostiariuses: Gatekeepers and wardens, tasked with guarding velstrac domains.
  • Evangelists: Messengers and agents of the velstrac lords—this is the rank of The Shadow-That-Walks.
  • Sacristans: Priests and torturers who lead rituals of pain and mutilation.
  • Conductors: Enforcers and executioners, skilled in the art of drawing out suffering.
  • Interlocutors: Negotiators and diplomats who speak for the velstrac lords.
  • Eremites: The highest rank, beings of immense power who craft flesh and shadow into terrifying new forms.

Velstracs on Golarion

Velstracs are most commonly encountered in the shadowy realm of Nidal, where the state worship of Zon-Kuthon is rigidly enforced. Indeed, many velstracs are created from the souls of Joyful Things, devotees of Zon-Kuthon who have had their limbs amputated to focus their minds on the veneration of pain, sacrifice, and torment.

But they are not limited to Nidal. The Shadow-That-Walks has established a foothold in Egorian, drawn by the centuries of infernal politics and the rich harvest of souls. It has found Cheliax to be a fertile ground for its machinations, and it will not leave easily.

🌑 Nidal & Zon-Kuthon

The velstrac's connection to Nidal is significant. The shadowy nation is a breeding ground for velstracs, and many velstracs are born from the souls of Zon-Kuthon's faithful. The Shadow-That-Walks may have allies in Nidal—or it may be a creature of such power that it has transcended the need for them.

"The shadow that falls over Cheliax is not the shadow of Hell—it is the shadow of something older, something that has been waiting in the darkness for centuries. And now, it has begun to walk."
