Scene 6 — The Ambush

The Twice-Damned Crown Pathfinder 2e

Setting: Egorian, Cheliax Location: Shadow District — Narrow Alley Type: Encounter / Combat Ambush Combat

The Shadow District grows darker as you move deeper into its labyrinthine alleys. The buildings press closer together, their crumbling facades casting long shadows that seem to reach for you. The air is thick with the scent of decay and desperation. You have been walking for ten minutes since leaving Voren's safe house, and the silence is wrong—too quiet, too still.

You feel it before you see it: the unmistakable weight of being watched. The watcher from the rooftop has reported your movements. They know where you are. They are waiting for you.

The alley narrows ahead, flanked by collapsed buildings on either side—a perfect kill zone. The only way forward is through.

👁️ Perception Check — DC 26

The silence is too deliberate. The shadows are too still. Something is wrong. As you scan the area, you notice a subtle glint of metal from a second-story window—a crossbow bolt being nocked. The ambush is waiting for you to walk into the kill zone.

Perception DC 26 Alertness ⚠️ Ambush Detected

Success (DC 26): You spot the crossbowman in the window and the fighters crouching in the rubble ahead. You have a moment of surprise—the ambushers do not know they have been seen.

Critical Success (DC 31): You see everything—the crossbowman, the fighters in the rubble, and a spellcaster hidden behind a collapsed column, fingers already tracing a spell. You know their positions and can act before they do.

Failure (DC 16-25): You sense that something is wrong, but you cannot identify the threat. You are on edge, but unprepared for the precise nature of the ambush.

Critical Failure (DC < 16): You notice nothing. The ambush is a complete surprise.

🌑 Stealth Check — DC 24

If you have detected the ambush, you have a brief window to turn the tables. The shadows are deep, and the ambushers are focused on the kill zone. You can use the darkness to reposition, flank the attackers, or even slip past them entirely.

Stealth DC 24 Avoid Detection 🌑 Shadow Use

Success (DC 24): You use the shadows to reposition—gaining a +2 circumstance bonus to initiative and the ability to start the encounter in a favorable position.

Critical Success (DC 29): You slip past the ambush entirely. The ambushers never see you. You reach the other side of the alley undetected, and can choose to circle around and attack from behind.

Failure (DC 15-23): You attempt to move, but a loose stone betrays your position. The ambushers know you are aware of them—the encounter begins, but without surprise.

Critical Failure (DC < 15): You are spotted as you try to move. The ambushers react first, and the encounter begins with you flat-footed.

📚 Society Check — DC 22

The ambushers are not random thugs. They are professionals—their positions are too precise, their discipline too coordinated. You recognize the insignia on their cloaks: a broken crown. This is the mark of a group known as the Scarred Hand, a mercenary company that operates in the Shadow District.

Society DC 22 Local Lore 🔎 Identify Faction

Success (DC 22): You recognize the Scarred Hand—mercenaries known for their ruthless efficiency. They are not cheap; someone with deep pockets hired them. They are likely led by a sergeant who is watching from a hidden position.

Critical Success (DC 27): You not only recognize the Scarred Hand, but you also notice that their leader is missing. They are setting a trap within a trap—the sergeant is waiting to strike once the party is committed.

Failure (DC 14-21): The attackers seem like common thugs—well-organized, but nothing unusual for the Shadow District.

Critical Failure (DC < 14): You have no idea who these attackers are. They seem like random criminals to you.

🎭 Scene Transition: The ambush is sprung. Whether the party detected it or not, the attackers move—crossbow bolts fly, fighters rush from cover, and the spellcaster begins to weave their magic. The alley explodes into chaos.
