Act 3 — The Warning

Echoes of the Emerald Past • A Pathfinder 2e Adventure

Act Summary: With the vault secured and the Crimson Mire contained, the party must return to the Magaambya to report their findings. But the Sporeborn are not defeated—only delayed. The party's actions have revealed the location of the vault, and the Sporeborn will be back. Elder Asha must be warned, and the Magaambya must prepare for the coming conflict.

Scene 3.1 — The Return

Setting: Jungle trail, returning to Nantambu

Recommended Level: 5 • Type: Exploration / Combat

The journey back is quicker—the party knows the path now, and they carry the weight of what they've discovered. The luminescent fungus that once marked their path is already fading, its magic severed from the vault's destruction. The jungle seems lighter, less oppressive, as if a great weight has been lifted from the land.

But the air still feels heavy, charged with the aftermath of the awakening. The party moves with purpose, knowing that every moment counts. The Sporeborn are out there, and they will not stop.

As they travel, they notice subtle signs that something is wrong. The birds are silent in certain areas. The jungle seems to hold its breath. And then they see it: a small group of figures moving through the undergrowth—humanoid shapes made of fungus and plant matter, their bodies covered in the same green luminescence that plagued the vault.

The Sporeborn scouts are moving toward the vault, unaware that it has already been secured. They are methodical, patient, and utterly alien in their movements—more plant than animal, more instinct than thought.

The lead scout stops, its head tilting at an unnatural angle. It has sensed something—perhaps the lingering magic of the vault on the party's equipment, or the scent of the fungal spores that still cling to their clothes.

Sporeborn Scout: "You... carry the essence. You have been to the Heartwood. What have you done?"

Its voice is a whisper of rustling leaves, dry and hollow.

Sporeborn Scout: "The Spore must spread. The Blight must grow. You cannot stop what is already in motion."

Encounter — Sporeborn Scouts

Combat — Sporeborn Scout Patrol

Encounter: 4× Sporeborn Scouts (level 4)

  • Terrain: Dense jungle, with thick undergrowth providing cover
  • Tactics: The scouts attempt to capture the party for interrogation. They use hit-and-run tactics, attacking from cover and retreating into the undergrowth.
  • Aftermath: If the party defeats the scouts, they find evidence of a larger Sporeborn force massing in the east.

Evidence from the Scouts

— Found on the bodies of the Sporeborn scouts

  • A map marked with Sporeborn positions. The map shows a large force gathering near the eastern edge of the Mwangi Expanse, near the border with Kyonin.
  • A fragment of a message written in a language of fungal spores. It speaks of the "Great Awakening" and the "Mire's return."
  • A spore pod that pulses with a faint green light—perhaps a communication device or a weapon.

GM Note: If the party is captured instead of fighting, they are taken to a Sporeborn encampment. They must escape and make their way back to Nantambu with valuable intelligence about the Sporeborn's plans.

The Journey Continues

After dealing with the scouts, the party presses on. The jungle gradually thins, and the familiar landmarks of the Magaambya's influence begin to appear—the distinctive white stones that mark the border of Nantambu's territory.

As they approach the city, they see smoke rising from the direction of the Magaambya. Not the smoke of destruction—but the smoke of activity. The Magaambya is preparing for something.

Scene 3.2 — The Warning

Setting: The Spire of the Magaambya, Nantambu

Recommended Level: 5 • Type: Social / Resolution

The party returns to the Spire of the Magaambya, where Elder Asha awaits. She stands in the Sunstone Observatory, her back to the party, staring out at the distant horizon. The sun is setting, painting the sky in shades of amber and crimson.

She turns as you enter, her face a mask of controlled concern. Her eyes search yours, looking for answers before you even speak.

Elder Asha: "You have returned. I saw the resonance fade—felt it stop. You succeeded."

She pauses, waiting for your report.

Elder Asha: "Tell me everything. Tell me what you found. Tell me what you did."

You deliver your report—the journey through the jungle, the entrance to the Heartwood Vault, the Hall of Echoes and the Guardian, the Spore Garden and the meeting with Seraphine, the battle against the Emerald Golem, and the discovery of the Crimson Mire vial. You explain your choice: to destroy it, to contain it, or to bring it back.

Elder Asha listens in silence, her expression growing graver with each word. When you finish, she is quiet for a long moment.

Elder Asha: "The Sporeborn... I had feared something like this might happen. The Magaambya has been monitoring their movements for months, but we didn't realize they were looking for the Heartwood Vault."

Elder Asha: "You have done an extraordinary thing. You have prevented a catastrophe that would have consumed the entire Mwangi Expanse. But the Sporeborn will not stop. This is only the beginning."

Elder Asha: "I must send word to the other Magaambyan outposts. We must prepare for war."

She moves to a table covered in maps and documents, her hands steady but her eyes troubled. She begins to issue orders to the attendants who have gathered—a flurry of activity that speaks of long experience in times of crisis.

The Sporeborn Threat

— As described by Elder Asha

  • Origin: The Sporeborn are believed to be an offshoot of the Crimson Mire—a fungal intelligence that has evolved over millennia to seek out and absorb sources of magical power.
  • Goal: They seek to spread the blight across Golarion, consuming all living things and replacing them with fungal growth.
  • Strength: They are organized, patient, and utterly alien. They do not feel fear, pain, or doubt. They only grow.
  • Weakness: Fire is their greatest enemy, but they have learned to shield themselves from it. They are also vulnerable to cold, though they can adapt.

The Aftermath

The Magaambya is thrown into a state of preparation. Messengers are dispatched to the other schools, to the cities of the Expanse, and to the distant nations of Kyonin and the Shining Kingdoms. The party is hailed as heroes, their names added to the rolls of the Magaambya's most honored defenders.

But the victory is bittersweet. Seraphine is gone, her body consumed by the fungus she fought for so long. The Heartwood Vault is sealed, its treasures and secrets lost to the river. And the Sporeborn are out there, growing stronger with each passing day.

Elder Asha calls the party together for one final meeting.

Elder Asha: "You have done more than you know. The Crimson Mire—the heart of the blight—is now destroyed or contained. The Sporeborn have lost their greatest weapon. You have bought us time."

Elder Asha: "But time is a fragile gift. The Sporeborn will adapt. They will find another way. And when they do, we will need you again."

Elder Asha: "For now, rest. Recover. Honor those you have lost. And know that you have made a difference—a difference that will echo through the ages."

The Reward

Elder Asha offers the party their choice of reward:

Legion's Rewards

  • Gold and Treasure: 500 gp worth of treasure from the Magaambya's vaults
  • Magic Items: One permanent magic item of level 5 or lower
  • Knowledge: Access to the Magaambya's restricted archives, containing ancient lore and rare spells
  • Favor: A favor from the Magaambya, to be called upon in the future
  • Title: The honorary title of "Watcher of the Emerald Legion," granting the party status and recognition among the Magaambya's defenders

Epilogue — The Coming Storm

As the party leaves the Spire, they see the sun setting over the Mwangi Expanse. The sky is clear, but on the eastern horizon, a faint green glow is visible—a sign that the Sporeborn are gathering. The party has won this battle, but the war is only beginning.

And somewhere, in the depths of the Magaambya's archives, a new entry is made in the chronicles of the Emerald Legion. A story of courage, sacrifice, and the enduring struggle against the blight. The party's names will be remembered.

"We who stand against the blight do swear this oath:

To guard the borders of the living world.

To seal away that which must never be released.

To sacrifice all that we are, and all that we will be,

That others may live in the light."

— The Emerald Legion Oath

The End

But the Sporeborn continue to gather. The Spore War is coming.
