What they find will lead them through the treacherous Vanji jungle, into a submerged vault of ancient elven magic, and face to face with a fungal blight that threatens to consume the entire region.

Now, something has awakened within its depths—and the fungal plague it once contained is spreading once more. The Spire of the Sunstone Observatory Elder Asha's Tower — The Tenth Tower Among the ring of ten terraced towers that form the Magaambya, one stands apart—not in height, for they are all of equal stature, but in purpose. While the other nine bear mosaics of the Ten Magic Warriors who served Old-Mage Jatembe, the tenth tower bears no warrior's face. Instead, its walls are adorned with a mosaic of the sun rising over the Vanji River—a fitting emblem for the tower that houses the Sunstone Observatory. This is Asha's Spire, the personal domain of Elder Asha, the Magaambya's foremost scholar of magical resonance and ancient containment magic. The Basement — The Root Vault Beneath the tower, where the roots of Nantambu's oldest trees intertwine with ancient stone, lies the Root Vault. This chamber is not for storage of grain or wine, but for the preservation of that which must be remembered and that which must never be touched. Shelves of petrified wood line the walls, holding scrolls too fragile for the upper floors and artifacts too dangerous for the light of day. A single enchanted lantern casts a steady amber glow, and the air is cool and still—perfect for the slow work of preservation. The First Floor — The Hall of Greeting The ground floor opens into a circular hall where the tower's mosaic is most visible: the sun's rays cascade down the walls in tiles of gold and amber. Here, Elder Asha receives visitors—students seeking guidance, scholars bearing news from distant lands, and adventurers summoned for tasks too delicate for formal audiences. A circular table of polished mahogany dominates the space, its surface inlaid with a map of the Mwangi Expanse carved in mother-of-pearl. The hall is warm, welcoming, and utterly unassuming—by design. The Second Floor — The Library of Resonances This floor is given over to Asha's personal collection: books, scrolls, and crystalline records of magical phenomena observed across the Expanse. Unlike the Magaambya's grand library, which houses texts on every conceivable subject, this collection is focused—devoted entirely to the study of magical signatures, resonance patterns, and the ancient containment techniques of the Emerald Legion. Shelves rise to the ceiling, and ladders on brass rails allow access to the highest tomes. A reading desk near the window offers a view of the Vanji River, where Asha often sits, watching the water and thinking of what lies beneath. The Third Floor — The Chamber of Echoes Here, Asha conducts her most sensitive work. The walls are lined with copper mesh, enchanted to dampen magical interference, creating a space where faint resonances can be detected without distraction. Crystalline orbs rest on pedestals, each attuned to a different frequency of magical energy. It was in this room that Elder Asha first detected the pulse from the Heartwood Vault—a rhythm like a heartbeat, deep beneath the Vanji River. The chamber is spare, almost ascetic, for its purpose demands clarity. The Fourth Floor — The Living Quarters Above the laboratories, the tower becomes a home. A small kitchen, a sleeping chamber with a bed draped in mosquito netting, and a sitting area with cushions in the warm colors of the Mwangi sun. The windows are open to the jungle air, and the sounds of Nantambu drift up from below—the calls of merchants, the laughter of children, the distant song of birds. Here, Asha reminds herself why she does this work: not for the love of magic alone, but for the people whose lives depend on the vigilance of the Magaambya. The Fifth Floor — The Sunstone Observatory The topmost floor is dominated by the Sunstone—a massive crystal lens that focuses light and magic alike. The roof is retractable, opening to the sky on clear nights, allowing Asha to study the stars and the magical currents that flow between them. A brass telescope, its body engraved with elven runes of precision and clarity, stands at the center of the room, its lens aimed at the heavens. This is the heart of the tower—the place where Elder Asha watches over the Expanse, reading the signs written in light and magic, and preparing for the storms that gather on the horizon. From the Root Vault to the Sunstone Observatory, Asha's Spire stands as a testament to the Magaambya's enduring mission: to acquire, protect, and disseminate knowledge—and to stand watch against the darkness that would consume the light.

Wildlife has become twisted and aggressive, luminous fungi spread through the jungle, and the magical pulse grows stronger with every passing day. If the vault's containment finally breaks, the blight could spread across the Mwangi Expanse with catastrophic consequences. --- The heroes are dispatched to investigate the disturbance. As they delve deeper into the vault, they uncover the Legion's final sacrifice, battle creatures transformed by the ancient plague, and piece together the truth behind the fortress's disappearance. --- In the end, the party must choose how to stop the corruption. They can restore the vault's failing containment, destroy the source of the blight, or risk unleashing an ancient plague upon the entire Mwangi Expanse.
Adventure Background
The Emerald Legion
During the Age of Darkness (circa 3000-2000 AR), the Mwangi Expanse was plagued by a series of devastating magical blights. The greatest of these was the Crimson Mire, a sentient fungal plague that consumed entire villages and corrupted the land itself. In response, a secret order of elven rangers and mages known as the Emerald Legion was formed. Their mission: contain and neutralize magical plagues by any means necessary.
The Legion's members were marked by distinctive emerald-colored badges enchanted to absorb and neutralize magical diseases. They operated from hidden fortresses throughout the Mwangi Expanse, the greatest of which was the Heartwood Vault—a submerged fortress built into the bedrock of the Vanji River. Here, the Legion stored their most dangerous discoveries and conducted their most perilous experiments.
The Legion vanished around 3000 AR, and the Heartwood Vault was sealed and submerged. For three millennia, it remained forgotten—until now.
The Awakening
Three days ago, Elder Asha of the Magaambya detected a powerful magical resonance emanating from deep beneath the Vanji River. The pulse—rhythmic, almost heartbeat-like—matches the signature of an Emerald Legion beacon. The beacons were used to signal distress or warn of containment breaches. If the beacon is active, it means the Heartwood Vault's ancient wards have been compromised.
Already, the effects are being felt. Strange luminescent fungus is spreading through the jungle, following the path of the resonance. Animals are fleeing the area, and those that remain are aggressive and confused. The fungal blight—possibly a descendant of the Crimson Mire—is reawakening.
The party must reach the vault, determine the source of the breach, and prevent the blight from spreading.
The Spore War Connection
Unknown to the party, the fungal blight is connected to the Spore War currently ravaging the borderlands of Kyonin. A faction of fungal intelligence known as the Sporeborn has been scouting the Mwangi Expanse for sites of ancient power. The Heartwood Vault, with its vast repository of magical plague samples, is a prime target. If the Sporeborn gain access to the vault's treasures, they could unleash a plague that would consume the entire continent.

Adventure Summary
The Mwangi Expanse—a vast, untamed wilderness of steaming jungles, ancient ruins, and forgotten empires—holds secrets that predate the rise of humanity. For millennia, the expanse has been a crucible of magic and mystery, from the fallen cities of the Jistka Imperium to the living pyramids of the Walkena. But beneath the canopy, older powers stir. A mysterious magical resonance has awakened deep within the jungle, emanating from a long-lost fortress of the ancient Emerald Legion—an elven order dedicated to containing magical plagues during the Age of Darkness. The Magaambya, the oldest magical academy in the world, has detected the signal and dispatched a party of adventurers to investigate. What they find will lead them through the treacherous Vanji River basin, into a submerged vault of ancient elven magic, and face to face with a fungal blight that threatens to consume the entire region.
The Emerald Legion was formed in the aftermath of the Crimson Mire, a sentient fungal plague that nearly consumed the Mwangi Expanse during the Age of Darkness (circa 3000-2000 AR). This was a time when the Gorilla King still ruled the southern jungles, when the Mwangi people were building their great stone cities, and when the elves of the Mualijae were but one of many factions struggling for survival. The Legion's members were marked by distinctive emerald-colored badges, enchanted to absorb and neutralize magical diseases. They operated from hidden fortresses throughout the Expanse, the greatest of which was the Heartwood Vault—a submerged fortress built into the bedrock of the Vanji River. Here, the Legion stored their most dangerous discoveries: samples of the Crimson Mire, notes on its behavior, and the secrets of their greatest creation—the Emerald Golems, constructs designed to destroy the blight. The Legion vanished around 3000 AR, their secrets swallowed by the jungle and the river.
Already, the effects are being felt across the Expanse. Strange luminescent fungus is spreading through the jungle, following the path of the resonance. Animals are fleeing the area, and those that remain are aggressive and confused. In the villages along the Vanji, the old stories are being whispered again—tales of the Mire's Hunger, of people who went into the jungle and never returned, of a green blight that consumed everything it touched. The fungal plague is reawakening, and it is hungry.
Player Character Hooks
This adventure offers deep hooks for characters connected to Golarion's rich lore:
- Elves: The Emerald Legion represents a forgotten chapter of elven history—a time when elves stood against the darkness rather than fleeing to their secluded enclaves. The Mualijae elves of the Mwangi Expanse may have oral traditions linking them to the Legion.
- Druids & Rangers of the Green Faith: The fungal blight is an affront to the natural order. Followers of Gozreh see the disruption of the Vanji River's ecosystem as a sacred wound that must be healed.
- Scholars & Wizards: The Heartwood Vault is a treasure trove of ancient magic, containing spells and artifacts that have been lost for millennia. Magaambya initiates seek to prove themselves by recovering this knowledge.
- Pathfinder Society Agents: The vault represents the ultimate discovery—a chance to uncover the secrets of the Emerald Legion and claim them for the Society's archives in Absalom.
- Followers of the Old Gods: The Emerald Legion's oath echoes the ancient pact between elves and the Green Mother. Clerics of Erastil or Gozreh may feel called to defend the land.
- Survivors of the Spore War: The fungal threat is not isolated—it is part of a larger pattern connected to the Spore War threatening Kyonin. Veterans of that conflict recognize the signs.
The stakes could not be higher. If the party fails, the fungal blight will spread beyond the Vanji River, consuming the Mwangi Expanse village by village, forest by forest. The Magaambya will fall, Nantambu will be overrun, and the Sporeborn will gain a foothold from which they can launch their assault on the rest of Golarion. The Emerald Legion's final fortress, the Heartwood Vault, was sealed beneath the Vanji River over three thousand years ago. Now, something has awakened within its depths—and the fungal plague it once contained is spreading once more. The party must navigate the vault's defenses, uncover the Legion's secrets, and either reseal the containment or destroy the threat entirely before it reaches the surface and spreads across the Mwangi Expanse. This is not just a dungeon crawl—it is a race against time to prevent a catastrophe that would reshape the face of the Expanse forever. The fate of the jungle, its people, and its ancient secrets rests in the hands of the party. Will they rise to meet the challenge, or will they be consumed by the very blight they seek to destroy?
Player Hook
The jungle has begun to dream in emerald light.
Deep within the Mwangi Expanse, beneath the dark waters of the Vanji River, something ancient has awakened. A pulse of green magic now beats through the roots, stones, and bones of the jungle—calling to lost ruins, stirring forgotten wards, and spreading luminous fungal growth where no such life should exist.
The Magaambya has traced the signal to the sealed remains of the Heartwood Vault, a drowned elven fortress built by the vanished Emerald Legion. Once, this secret order stood against magical plagues that could corrupt entire lands. Now their final warning beacon is active again.
Animals flee. Spores glow in the mist. The river reflects shapes that are not there. If the vault has failed, the Mwangi Expanse may be facing the return of a blight buried for three thousand years.
You have been chosen—or have chosen yourselves—to follow the emerald resonance into the jungle, uncover the truth of the vanished Legion, and decide whether the past should be sealed away forever… or brought back into the light.
Enter the Heartwood Vault. Stop the spreading blight. Survive the echoes of the emerald past.
