The Spore War Begins
Act 4 — The Spore War Begins
Echoes of the Emerald Past • A Pathfinder 2e Adventure
Act Summary: The fragile peace is shattered. The Sporeborn have launched a full-scale invasion, sweeping across the eastern Mwangi Expanse and threatening the borders of Kyonin. The party must rally the forces of the region—elves, humans, and the Magaambya—to stand against the fungal tide. This is the beginning of the Spore War, and the fate of the Expanse hangs in the balance.
Scene 4.1 — The Tide Rises
Setting: Eastern border of the Mwangi Expanse
Recommended Level: 6 • Type: Exploration / Combat
It has been three weeks since the party returned from the Heartwood Vault. The Magaambya has been busy—messengers have been dispatched, alliances have been forged, and the defenses of Nantambu have been strengthened. But despite all the preparations, the Sporeborn have been growing in strength, their fungal armies swelling with each passing day.
Now, the tide has broken. A massive Sporeborn force has swept across the eastern border of the Mwangi Expanse, overwhelming the small settlements and outposts that stood in their way. The fungal tide is moving westward, toward the heart of the Expanse—toward Nantambu.
The party is summoned to the Sunstone Observatory, where Elder Asha stands before a map marked with the latest intelligence. Her face is grim.
Elder Asha: "The Sporeborn have crossed the border. They are moving faster than we anticipated—their forces have already taken the villages of Kana's Rest and Greenhollow. They will reach Nantambu within a week if we do not stop them."
Elder Asha: "We have received word from Kyonin. The elven armies are mobilizing, but they will not arrive in time. We must hold the line ourselves."
Elder Asha: "I am sending you east, to the village of Verdant Watch. It is the last defensible position before the open plains. Hold it. Slow the Sporeborn advance. Give us time to rally the full strength of the Magaambya."
She hands you a sealed scroll—orders for the garrison of Verdant Watch, authorizing you to take command in her name.
Intelligence Briefing
— From the Magaambya's war council
- Sporeborn Strength: Estimated at 2,000 fungal warriors, with more growing each day
- Key Leaders: The Sporeborn are led by a Fungal Tyrant—a massive, ancient creature that serves as the hive-mind's focus
- Verdant Watch: A fortified village with 200 defenders, mostly militia and Magaambyan students
- Reinforcements: The Magaambya is gathering a relief force, but it will take 5 days to arrive
The March to Verdant Watch
The journey east takes two days. The landscape grows increasingly grim as you approach the front lines. Villages are abandoned, their inhabitants fleeing before the fungal tide. The jungle shows signs of blight—leaves turning brown, trees covered in the luminescent green fungus that you saw in the Heartwood Vault.
As you travel, you encounter refugees—families fleeing the Sporeborn, their belongings piled high on carts, their faces etched with fear. They speak of horrors: fungal creatures that move like men, spore clouds that choke the life from the land, and the relentless advance of the blight.
You arrive at Verdant Watch to find the village already under siege. A small force of Sporeborn scouts has encircled the village, probing its defenses. The defenders are tired, their supplies running low, but they hold their positions.
Captain Torek, a grizzled human soldier with a scarred face, greets you at the gate.
Captain Torek: "You're the Magaambya's reinforcements? I was expecting more than five of you."
He spits on the ground, shaking his head.
Captain Torek: "But I'm not going to complain. We've held these walls for three days, and we're running low on everything—food, arrows, and hope. Any help is welcome."
Captain Torek: "The Sporeborn are pressing us hard. They're trying to find a weak point in the defenses. If they break through, it's over."
Encounter — Repelling the Scouts
Combat — Sporeborn Siege
Encounter: 6× Sporeborn Warriors (level 5) + 1× Sporeborn Siege Beast (level 6)
- Terrain: Fortified village walls; the defenders have prepared defensive positions
- Tactics: The Sporeborn attempt to breach the main gate. The Siege Beast provides cover fire with its spore launcher.
- Victory Condition: Defeat the siege beast; the remaining warriors will retreat.
As the last of the Sporeborn retreats, Captain Torek approaches you, his expression grim.
Captain Torek: "That was just a probe. The main force will be here within a day."
Captain Torek: "We need to prepare. We need to hold this village for the Magaambya. For the Expanse."
Scene 4.2 — The Battle of Verdant Watch
Setting: Verdant Watch, eastern Mwangi Expanse
Recommended Level: 7 • Type: Mass Combat / Siege
Dawn breaks over Verdant Watch, revealing the full extent of the Sporeborn army. Thousands of fungal creatures stretch across the horizon, their bodies pulsing with a malevolent green light. At their center stands the Fungal Tyrant—a massive, towering creature of twisted wood and pulsating flesh, its body covered in the luminescent fungus.
The defenders of Verdant Watch stand on the walls, their weapons ready. Captain Torek gives the order to prepare for battle. The Magaambyan students—barely more than children—steady their hands and recite the spells they have learned.
The air is thick with tension. The Sporeborn army begins to move.
The Fungal Tyrant's voice echoes across the battlefield—a dry, rustling whisper that seems to come from everywhere at once.
Fungal Tyrant: "You cannot resist the Spore. You cannot stop the Blight. The Mire will consume all. Your world will become our garden."
The army surges forward.
The Siege of Verdant Watch
The battle is fierce. The Sporeborn throw wave after wave of warriors against the walls, their fungal bodies clawing at the stone. The defenders fight with desperation, knowing that this is the last line of defense before the Sporeborn reach the heart of the Mwangi Expanse.
The party must lead the defense, coordinating the defenders and taking on the most dangerous threats. The battle has several phases:
- Phase 1 — The Assault: The Sporeborn attempt to breach the walls. The party must repel them and seal any breaches.
- Phase 2 — The Siege Beast: The Fungal Tyrant sends its Siege Beasts against the main gate. The party must destroy them before they break through.
- Phase 3 — The Tyrant's Advance: The Fungal Tyrant itself moves toward the walls. The party must defeat it—or buy enough time for the Magaambya's reinforcements to arrive.
Battle Tactics
- Archers on the Walls: The defenders can fire volleys of arrows, but they are running low. The party can retrieve ammunition from the fallen or use magical attacks.
- Fire: Fire is the Sporeborn's greatest weakness. The party can use fire spells, alchemical fire, or flaming arrows to devastating effect.
- Leadership: The party can inspire the defenders, granting them +1 morale bonus to attack and damage rolls.
- Rally Points: The party can reinforce weak points in the defenses, preventing the Sporeborn from breaking through.
GM Note: This is a mass combat scene. The party's decisions can turn the tide of the battle. Success or failure will have lasting consequences for the future of the Mwangi Expanse.

As the Siege Beast falls, the defenders of Verdant Watch cheer. The Sporeborn army wavers, its advance momentarily halted.
Captain Torek: "We've done it! The beast is dead!"
But the celebration is short-lived. The Fungal Tyrant advances.
Captain Torek: "The Tyrant... it's coming. We can't hold it back alone. We need you to stop it."
Scene 4.3 — The Fungal Tyrant
Setting: The battlefield before Verdant Watch
Recommended Level: 8 • Type: Boss Combat
The Fungal Tyrant lumbers toward Verdant Watch, each step shaking the ground. It is a nightmare of twisted wood and pulsating fungus, its body covered in eyes and mouths that drip with green ichor. It stands thirty feet tall, its arms ending in massive claws that can crush a house.
As it approaches, the defenders fall back. They cannot stand against this creature. The party must face it alone.
Fungal Tyrant: "You are brave, little mortals. But bravery will not save you. The Spore will consume you. The Blight will take you. You will become part of the garden."
Fungal Tyrant: "You destroyed the Heartwood Vault. You took the Crimson Mire from us. But we have found other ways. The Blight is eternal. The Spore is endless. You cannot stop what is already in motion."
The Tyrant raises its claws and charges. The battle begins.
Encounter — The Fungal Tyrant
Boss Encounter — Fungal Tyrant

- Disrupt Regeneration: The Tyrant heals each round. Fire damage prevents its regeneration (it cannot heal the round after taking fire damage).
- Spread Out: The Tyrant's Spore Cloud is devastating. Spread out to avoid being caught in the area of effect.
- Focus Fire: The Tyrant has a lot of HP. Focus your attacks on it to bring it down before it overwhelms you.
As the Tyrant staggers under your assault, its body cracking and burning, it lets out a final, defiant roar.
Fungal Tyrant: "You... have delayed the inevitable. The Spore... will... spread... It is... only a matter... of time..."
The Tyrant collapses, its body crumbling into a pile of ash and fungus. The Sporeborn army, leaderless, begins to dissolve—its fungal warriors collapsing into piles of spores that scatter on the wind.
Aftermath
The battle is won. Verdant Watch stands. The Sporeborn army is broken, its leader destroyed. The defenders of the village cheer, their voices hoarse with exhaustion and relief.
Captain Torek approaches you, his face streaked with ash and blood.
Captain Torek: "You did it. You actually did it."
He shakes his head in disbelief.
Captain Torek: "I've never seen anything like it. You faced the Tyrant and won. The Magaambya will remember this day."
Captain Torek: "The Sporeborn are broken. It will take them years to recover. But they will be back. They always come back."
As the sun sets over the battlefield, a distant horn sounds. The Magaambya's relief force has arrived—too late for the battle, but in time to secure the victory. The war is not over, but this battle has been won.
Scene 4.4 — The Cost of Victory
Setting: Verdant Watch, after the battle
Recommended Level: 6 • Type: Social / Resolution
The morning after the battle, the village of Verdant Watch is quiet. The dead have been buried. The wounded are being tended. The survivors gather in the village square to honor those who fell.
Elder Asha has arrived with the relief force. She stands before the assembled crowd, her voice carrying across the square.
Elder Asha: "Today, we honor the fallen. Those who gave their lives to defend the Expanse. Those who stood against the Sporeborn and refused to fall."
Elder Asha: "But we also honor the living. Those who fought with courage beyond measure. Those who faced the Fungal Tyrant and defeated it."
Elder Asha: "You are the guardians of the Expanse. You have proven that the Sporeborn can be defeated. That the Blight can be stopped. That the light will not be extinguished."
The crowd cheers. Names are read. Honors are given. And the party is hailed as the saviors of Verdant Watch.
Legacy of Verdant Watch
- The Party's Names: They are etched into the village's memorial stone—a permanent reminder of their heroism.
- A New Title: The party is granted the title "Defenders of the Expanse," a honorific that will be recognized throughout the Mwangi Expanse.
- A Gift from Kyonin: The elven armies, belatedly arriving, offer a gift of gratitude: a +1 striking weapon of the party's choice.
- The Sporeborn's Retreat: The Sporeborn have retreated to the eastern border, but they are not destroyed. The war continues.
Epilogue — A New Dawn
As the party prepares to leave Verdant Watch, Elder Asha pulls them aside. Her expression is serious, but there is hope in her eyes.
Elder Asha: "You have done more than save a village. You have shown the Expanse that the Sporeborn can be defeated. You have inspired hope in a time of darkness."
Elder Asha: "But the war is not over. The Sporeborn will regroup. They will find new leaders, new weapons, new ways to spread their blight. We must be ready."
Elder Asha: "I am asking you to continue this fight. To stand with the Magaambya. To be the shield that protects the Expanse."
Elder Asha: "Will you accept this charge?"
The party has a choice:
- Accept: The party commits to defending the Expanse against the Sporeborn. They become the Magaambya's champions, leading the fight against the fungal threat. (This opens the door to a longer campaign.)
- Decline: The party has done their part. They have saved the Expanse from the immediate threat. They are free to pursue their own destinies. (The module ends here, with the party remembered as heroes.)
Whatever the party decides, Elder Asha bows her head in gratitude.
Elder Asha: "Whether you stay or go, know that you have made a difference. The Expanse will never forget what you did here today."
Elder Asha: "May the light of the Magaambya guide your path."
