Scene 1.1 — The Tower's Discovery

Setting: The Spire of the Magaambya, Nantambu

Recommended Level: 4 • Type: Social / Investigation

The ancient Spire of the Magaambya rises above the city of Nantambu, its walls covered in vibrant green moss and arcane runes that glow with a soft amber light. You have been summoned to the Sunstone Observatory, a circular chamber at the spire's peak where magical phenomena are studied and catalogued.

Elder Asha, a tall elf with silver-streaked hair and eyes that gleam with ancient wisdom, stands before a crystalline orb that pulses with an erratic, rhythmic light—like a heartbeat.

Elder Asha: "Thank you for coming so quickly. I've been monitoring the magical resonance patterns across the Mwangi Expanse for decades, and three days ago, something... awakened. A pulse, deep beneath the Vanji River."

Elder Asha: "I believe it's an Emerald Legion beacon. A distress signal, perhaps. Or worse, a warning. The Emerald Legion was an ancient elven order dedicated to containing magical plagues. If their beacon has activated, it means something has breached their containment."

She gestures to a map on the table, marking the location with a glowing sigil.

Elder Asha: "I need you to investigate. Find the source of the resonance and determine what has awakened. If the Legion's wards have failed, it could mean catastrophe for the entire region."

Elder Asha: "I've prepared supplies for your journey—healing potions, antidotes, and rations for the trek. I've also included an old Emerald Legion insignia I found in the archives. It may help you gain entry to the vault if the wards still recognize their own."

Information Gathering

The party has the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the mission:

  • What is the Emerald Legion? (Requires DC 18 Society or Arcana check)
  • What do you know about the Vanji River area? (Requires DC 15 Nature or Survival check)
  • Are there any dangers we should prepare for? (Elder Asha warns of jungle predators and the spreading fungus)
  • Is there anyone else we should speak with? (Elder Asha suggests visiting Archivist Olumide in the Magaambya Library)

The Magaambya Library

If the party visits the library, Archivist Olumide—a cheerful gnome with a passion for history—can provide additional information:

Archivist Olumide: "The Emerald Legion! Oh, what a fascinating order. They were quite secretive, you know—very few records of their operations survive. But I do have a few fragments you might find useful."

He produces a sheaf of ancient papers:

  • A fragment describing the Heartwood Vault as a "submerged fortress built into the bedrock of the Vanji River."
  • A sketch of an Emerald Legion sigil—a green circle with a stylized tree at its center.
  • A note mentioning the "Six Steps"—a series of passwords or keys required to open the vault's main gate.

The Emerald Legion (Excerpt from the Magaambya Archives)

— Compiled by Archivist Olumide, 4212 AR

The Emerald Legion was a secretive order of elven rangers and mages established during the Age of Darkness to contain magical and alchemical plagues that threatened to consume the Mwangi Expanse. Their most notable achievement was the Great Sundering of the Crimson Mire, a blight that would have otherwise spread to become a continent-wide catastrophe.

The Legion's members were known for their distinctive emerald-colored badges, enchanted to absorb and neutralize magical diseases. Their last known fortress, the Heartwood Vault, was submerged beneath the Vanji River around 3000 AR and has not been heard from since.
