The Heartwood Vault
Act 2 — The Heartwood Vault
Echoes of the Emerald Past • A Pathfinder 2e Adventure
Act Summary: The party enters the submerged fortress of the Emerald Legion. Within, they must navigate the vault's defenses, uncover the secrets of the fungal blight, and discover what caused the ancient beacon to activate. They will face guardians, traps, and the lingering remnants of the Legion's experiments as they descend into the heart of the vault.
Scene 2.1 — The Hall of Echoes
Setting: Entrance corridor, Heartwood Vault
Recommended Level: 5 • Type: Exploration / Social
The massive stone door groans as it swings open, revealing a dark tunnel that descends into the bedrock beneath the Vanji River. The air that wafts up is cool and dry—remarkably preserved for a structure that has been submerged for three millennia. The luminescent fungus clings to the walls here too, but it is thinner, sparser, as if the vault's ancient magic is suppressing its growth.
The tunnel slopes downward for nearly a hundred feet, the walls carved with intricate elven runes that tell a story of vigilance and sacrifice. The runes speak of the Emerald Legion's oath: to stand against the blight, to guard the borders of the living world, and to seal away that which must never be released. As you descend, you feel the weight of the river above you, pressing down on the stone, a constant reminder of the vault's isolation.
At the bottom of the tunnel, the passage opens into a vast hall. Its ceiling is lost in shadow, supported by massive columns of carved stone, each covered in intricate elven runes and symbols. The air is cool and dry, and the faint glow of the fungus provides the only illumination. The hall is remarkably preserved—the stone shows no sign of wear, the carvings are sharp and clear, as if carved only yesterday.
At the far end of the hall, a massive stone door stands sealed. The door is covered in emerald gems that pulse with a faint light, arranged in a pattern that forms a stylized tree—the symbol of the Emerald Legion. In front of the door, a stone pedestal holds a single item: a crystal mask, perfectly preserved and gleaming with an inner light.
As you approach, a voice echoes through the hall—ancient, weary, and tinged with sorrow.
The voice echoes through the hall, seeming to come from the walls themselves.
Voice: "Who approaches the Heartwood Vault? Who disturbs the sleep of the Emerald Legion?"
The voice is calm but carries an undeniable weight of authority.
Voice: "I am the Guardian of this place. I have held my vigil for three thousand years. Speak your purpose, or be turned away."
A shimmering form begins to coalesce before the stone door—a spectral figure in ancient elven armor, its features indistinct but its presence unmistakable. The Spectral Guardian regards the party with eyes that hold the weight of millennia.
The Emerald Legion Oath
— Inscribed on the walls of the Hall of Echoes
"We who stand against the blight do swear this oath:
To guard the borders of the living world.
To seal away that which must never be released.
To sacrifice all that we are, and all that we will be,
That others may live in the light."
— The Emerald Legion, circa 2500 AR
The Guardian's Test
The spirit is not immediately hostile; it tests the party's intentions. It asks the party three questions, each probing their understanding of the Legion's purpose and their worthiness to enter the vault.
Guardian: "First, tell me: what is the purpose of the Emerald Legion?"
Pause. The spirit waits for an answer.
Guardian: "Second: who is the enemy we swore to fight?"
Another pause. The spirit's form flickers.
Guardian: "Third and final: what would you sacrifice to protect the Expanse?"
- Question 1: "To contain and neutralize magical plagues." — Correct answer; the spirit nods in approval.
- Question 2: "The Crimson Mire and all similar blights." — Correct answer; the spirit's form steadies.
- Question 3: "Personal honor, safety, or life itself." — Correct answer; the spirit bows its head.
Guardian: "You have answered well. You carry the insignia of the Legion—that alone speaks of your connection to our purpose. But the vault is not what it once was. Something has breached our defenses. Something ancient and patient."
Guardian: "I cannot stop you from entering. But I warn you: the Sporeborn have infected the deeper levels. The Golem still guards the Sanctum, but it has been corrupted. It will not distinguish friend from foe."
Guardian: "Take the mask. It will help you see what the fungus hides. And may the Legion's blessings guide your path."
The spirit fades, leaving only the crystal mask on its pedestal. The mask is cool to the touch, its surface smooth and polished. When worn, it allows the wearer to see magical auras and detect the presence of the fungal blight. It also serves as a key for deeper areas of the vault.
The Crystal Mask
Crystal Mask of the Emerald Legion
Level: 5 • Usage: Worn (mask)
Description: This crystal mask is perfectly clear and cool to the touch. It was worn by the Emerald Legion's Watchers—those tasked with detecting and tracking magical plagues.
Abilities:
- Detect Blight: The wearer can see the presence of the fungal blight as a faint green aura. This grants a +2 circumstance bonus to Perception checks to notice blight-related hazards.
- See Auras: The wearer can see magical auras (as detect magic) at will.
- Key to the Sanctum: The mask is required to open the seal to the Emerald Sanctum.
Scene 2.2 — The Spore Garden
Setting: Lower level, Heartwood Vault
Recommended Level: 5 • Type: Exploration / Combat
Beyond the Hall of Echoes, the vault opens into a vast underground chamber—the Spore Garden. This was once the Legion's primary research facility, where they studied and contained the fungal blight. But now, the chamber is a nightmare of overgrown fungus and decaying vegetation.
The luminescent green fungus is everywhere, pulsing with an eerie light, and the air is thick with spores. The walls are covered in thick mats of fungal growth, and strange alien structures rise from the floor like twisted trees made of flesh and spore. The chamber is warm and humid, and the sound of dripping water echoes through the space—a reminder that the river flows somewhere above.
At the center of the chamber, a massive fungal bloom rises from the floor, its surface covered in glowing nodules. The bloom pulses with the same rhythm as the beacon—this is the source of the resonance. And at its base, you see a figure: an elven woman, her body partially consumed by the fungus, but still alive, still breathing.
The woman stirs as you approach, her eyes opening with visible effort.
The Woman: "You... you came. I never thought... it's been so long."
She coughs, spores drifting from her lips. Her voice is thin, reedy, like wind through dead leaves.
The Woman: "My name is Seraphine. I was a Legionnaire. I was left here to guard the vault when the Legion fell. But something broke through. The Sporeborn—they found us. They've been corrupting the vault from the inside for... I don't know how long. I've been trying to hold them back, but I'm failing."
Seraphine: "The beacon was my last hope. I thought if I could signal the outside world, someone would come. But I didn't think it would take three thousand years."
She smiles weakly, and for a moment, you can see the warrior she once was—proud, fierce, and unbending.
Seraphine: "The Sporeborn are seeking the Crimson Mire. They believe they can control it—use it as a weapon. They don't understand what they're dealing with. The Mire cannot be controlled. It consumes everything. It is consumption."
Seraphine: "You must stop them. The Golem in the Sanctum—it was our greatest creation. It was made to destroy the Mire. But the Sporeborn have corrupted it. You'll have to destroy it to reach the heart of the vault."
The Sporeborn Threat
What Seraphine Knows
- The Sporeborn: A faction of fungal intelligence that seeks to spread the blight across Golarion. They are not mindless—they are organized, patient, and utterly alien in their thinking.
- The Crimson Mire: The original blight that the Emerald Legion was created to contain. It is sentient, malevolent, and cannot be destroyed—only sealed.
- The Golem: A massive construct of emerald stone, created to destroy the Mire. It is now corrupted and will attack anything that approaches the Sanctum.
- The Vault's Defense: The Heartwood Vault has multiple layers of defense. The party has passed the Hall of Echoes, but the Spore Garden and the Sanctum remain.
Seraphine's Warning: "The Sporeborn have been watching you since you entered the vault. They know you're here. They will try to stop you. Do not underestimate them."
Encounter — Fungal Infestation
As the party speaks with Seraphine, the fungal bloom begins to stir. The Sporeborn have detected the intruders and are sending their guardians to eliminate the threat.
Combat — Fungal Guardian Assault
Encounter: 1× Fungal Crawler (level 5) + 2× Fungal Spores (level 3)
- Terrain: Spore Garden; difficult terrain in fungus patches, spore clouds in the air
- Hazards: Spore eruptions (triggered by movement in certain areas, Fortitude DC 18 vs. sickened)
- Tactics: The Fungal Crawler emerges from the bloom and attacks the nearest target. The Spores drift through the air, attempting to engulf the party.
As the last of the fungal creatures falls, Seraphine struggles to her feet, leaning heavily on a staff of twisted wood.
Seraphine: "That was just the first wave. The Sporeborn will send more. You need to reach the Sanctum before they overwhelm you."
Seraphine: "I cannot go with you. I am too weak—the fungus has taken too much of me. But I can offer you this."
She places a hand on your shoulder. A warmth spreads through you, healing some of your wounds.
Seraphine: "Go now. The Sanctum is beyond that door. The Golem waits for you."
Seraphine: "And when you face it... remember the Legion's oath. We who stand against the blight do not falter."
Seraphine's Gift
If the party defended Seraphine, she offers what aid she can:
- Healing Touch: A blessing that restores 4d8+8 HP to one party member (once per day).
- Legion Knowledge: Information about the Emerald Sanctum's layout and defenses.
- Warning: "The Golem's weakness is fire. But beware—it has learned to shield itself from the flames."
Scene 2.3 — The Emerald Sanctum
Setting: Deepest level, Heartwood Vault
Recommended Level: 6 • Type: Combat / Climax
Beyond the Spore Garden, a narrow corridor descends even deeper into the earth. The walls here are lined with sealed containers, each marked with an emerald seal—the Legion's most dangerous treasures, locked away for eternity. The seals are intact, but the fungus is everywhere, creeping along the walls and seeping into the cracks.
At the end of the corridor, a massive stone door stands sealed. The door is carved with the same tree sigil as the entrance, but here it is surrounded by a complex pattern of interlocking runes. The crystal mask you recovered from the Hall of Echoes glows as you approach—the seal recognizes its own.
As you press the mask to the door, the runes flare with emerald light. The door groans and slowly swings open, revealing the Emerald Sanctum.
The Sanctum is vast—a cathedral of stone and magic. The ceiling is lost in shadow, supported by towering pillars of emerald-veined marble. At the center of the chamber stands a massive stone construct—the Emerald Golem. It is a towering figure, its body made of polished green stone and carved with intricate elven runes. Its eyes glow with a malevolent light, and its body is covered in the luminescent green fungus. The Sporeborn have corrupted it, turning the Legion's greatest creation against its own purpose.
As you enter, the golem stirs. Its voice is a grinding, stone-on-stone sound, cracked and corrupted by the fungal infection.
Emerald Golem: "INTRUDERS. THE SPORE MUST SPREAD. THE BLIGHT MUST GROW. YOU WILL BE CONSUMED."
Emerald Golem: "THE MIRE AWAKENS. YOUR WORLD WILL FALL. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE."
The golem lurches forward, its massive stone fists raised to strike. The fungus on its body pulses with malevolent energy, and spores drift from its joints like smoke.
Encounter — The Emerald Golem
Boss Encounter — Corrupted Emerald Golem
Level: 7 • XP: 120
- HP: 110
- AC: 25
- Damage: Slam +18 (2d10+8 bludgeoning plus 1d6 fungus)
- Special: Spore Burst (reaction when damaged, 10-foot burst, DC 22 Fortitude vs. sickened 2)
- Immunities: Bleed, poison, disease, mental effects
- Weaknesses: Fire 10
- Resistances: Physical 5 (except bludgeoning)
Golem Tactics
- Phase 1 (HP 75-110): The golem relentlessly attacks the nearest target, using its Spore Burst when damaged.
- Phase 2 (HP 40-74): The golem becomes more aggressive, making two Slam attacks per round. It targets spellcasters and those using fire, recognizing them as the greatest threats.
- Phase 3 (HP 0-39): The golem goes berserk. It makes three Slam attacks per round and uses Spore Burst at the start of each of its turns. It focuses on the weakest party member.
The Battle
As the golem attacks, the Sanctum itself seems to awaken. The walls pulse with emerald light, and the ancient magic of the Legion stirs. Every strike against the golem echoes through the chamber, and the fungus on its body writhes in response.
The party must work together to bring down the golem, using fire to exploit its weakness and avoiding its devastating slam attacks. The golem is relentless, and the fungus makes it more dangerous with each passing moment.
As the golem takes damage, you hear a voice—ancient, faint, but unmistakably Seraphine's.
Seraphine: "Remember the oath! We who stand against the blight do not falter!"
Her voice gives you strength.
Aftermath
When the golem finally falls, it crumbles to dust, its emerald body shattering into a thousand shards. The fungus on its body withers and dies, releasing one final cloud of spores before collapsing.
Behind the golem's pedestal, you find a sealed container marked with the Emerald Legion's highest seal. Inside is a vial of pure black liquid—a concentrated sample of the original Crimson Mire blight. This is what the Sporeborn came for. If released, it would spread a plague that would consume the entire Mwangi Expanse.
The Crimson Mire Vial
You now face a choice:
- Destroy it: The vial is shattered, eliminating the threat forever. The vault's magic destabilizes, and you must escape before it collapses. (Recommended for most parties)
- Contain it: You find a way to reseal the container and return it to the Magaambya for study and safe storage. (Requires Arcana or Thievery DC 22)
- Use it: You could attempt to use the blight as a weapon against the Sporeborn—but this carries immense risk. (Not recommended; alignment shift for good characters)
As you stand over the vial, you hear a whisper—the fading voice of Seraphine, carried on the vault's dying magic.
Seraphine: "The Legion's work is done. You have fulfilled our oath. Whatever you decide, know that you have saved the Expanse."
Seraphine: "Go now. The vault is dying. Do not let its fate become yours."
Silence.
GM Note: Whatever the party chooses, the vault begins to collapse. The party must escape through the Spore Garden and the Hall of Echoes before the vault is sealed forever. The journey out is a skill challenge (Athletics, Acrobatics, Survival) with escalating DCs.
Escape!
The vault groans around you. The walls crack. Water begins to pour in from above—the Vanji River, finally breaching the ancient walls. You must flee.
- Through the Spore Garden: The fungus is dying, but the structures are collapsing. (Acrobatics DC 18 to navigate the falling debris)
- Through the Hall of Echoes: The columns are cracking, and the ceiling is falling. (Athletics DC 20 to dodge falling stone)
- Up the Tunnel: The entrance is collapsing. You must make it to the surface before the tunnel seals. (Survival DC 16 to find the fastest path)
