S1 — The Lantern & Ledger Briefing

PLAYER CHECKLIST · THREE ESTATES

The Three Vhalek Keys

Professor Manderhein opens the folio to a family diagram marked by three small, precise symbols: a prism, a cinder-wheel, and a thorned knot. “They were never meant to be used alone,” she says. “Find all three. Then we learn whether the rifts can be governed—or only survived.”
Recovery checklist
Completion: Recover all three keys intact. Each key provides a clue toward controlling the next rift; together they reveal the Vhalek control sequence.
HISTORY · HOUSE VHALEK

Why the Vhalek Keys Matter

The Vhalek siblings did not build three unrelated curiosities. Varos Vhalek proved that a rift could be measured and repeated. Sered Vhalek made that theory survive heat, pressure, and imperfect materials. Maelis Vhalek established the names, promises, and witnesses that stopped a doorway from inviting the wrong thing through.
One control method, divided three ways
  • Glass · VarosThe Prism Key shows where a threshold can exist and how its angles must align.
  • Ash · SeredThe Ember Key determines when the threshold can bear force without rupturing.
  • Thorns · MaelisThe Thorn Seal determines who or what the threshold recognizes as allowed to cross.
Together: Prism, regulator, and seal form a complete rift-control protocol. The keys do not close every portal automatically, but they reveal what must be aligned, restrained, and named before a rift can be controlled safely.
DOWNTIME · BEFORE THE SOUTH ROAD

Downtime in Auginford

Auginford gives the party one last stretch of ordinary time: a dry room, a hot meal, lantern-light in shop windows, and people who still measure danger by tomorrow’s weather.
Useful downtime choices
  • Gather leadsSpeak with the innkeeper, ferrymen, chapel staff, or road wardens for one grounded clue about an estate or its approaches.
  • Prepare equipmentBuy supplies, repair gear, copy maps, or arrange a practical favor through Auginford’s shops and services.
  • Research the VhaleksUse the chapel archive, Lantern & Ledger’s books, or Professor Manderhein’s folio to identify a sibling’s methods or a mansion’s recurring sign.
  • Recover and planRest, train, craft, or decide how the party will respond when a delay clock or rift complication escalates.
GM use: Reward a focused downtime activity with one concrete benefit: a rumor, a mundane resource, a route detail, or a narrow situational edge. Keep the benefit practical; the Mansions should still hold their secrets.
TRANSITION · ACT 0 TO ACT 1

When the Party Leaves Auginford

Once the party has concluded business in town, point them to the Uskwood Edge. Warden Elowen Reed offers the final safe camp before the Mansions; from her shelter, the Mansion of Ash is a half-day hike. Begin Act 1 when the party reaches the mansion’s ruined gate and its flooded foundation below.
Travel pace: Treat the trail to Ash as a single transition unless the party chooses to investigate it. Travel between the three mansion grounds takes about one hour by the old service paths, though rift activity can make a familiar route feel wrong without changing its actual destination.
