Encounter: The Whispering Naiad
Backstory & Transitions (How the Party Got Here):

Before the adventure begins, the party is simply a group of capable, hungry adventurers traveling the rivers of the Inner Sea. Their original goals were their own—perhaps seeking a lost relic, hunting a bounty, or simply trying to pay off a debt. Then, the word reached them. The name of Macridi was whispered in taverns from Absalom to Kerse: a logging town with a sudden, desperate problem, and a Guildmaster willing to pay gold to solve it.

They were hired through a series of letters and contracts, or perhaps intercepted by a Blackjacket courier on the road, carrying the official summons from the Guildmaster herself. They were paid a small travel stipend to make their way to the confluence of the Great Goldpan and Profit's Flow. The journey took them down the rivers, through the misty outer edges of the Palakar Forest, past the eerie silence of the trees, and into the quiet, suffocating wealth of Macridi. They have just arrived, checked their gear, and stepped out onto the streets to take in the town.

GM Note: Guildmaster Venna's Summons. The party must first report to the Logging Hall before they can leave the town. Venna does not hire just anyone. If they ignore her summons, the Blackjackets will politely but firmly escort them to her office. When they arrive, she is cold, sharp, and calculating. She lays out the contract and demands their full attention.

Her Dialogue: "You are here because I am paying you to be here. Let us not waste time—time is the only commodity that cannot be bought back. The forest is dying. My foreman is missing. The fey have locked their doors. I do not care about the 'ancient balance' or the 'will of nature.' I care about my ledger. You will find the source of this disturbance, you will eliminate it, and you will return my foreman's ledger to me. If you die, you will not be compensated. If you succeed, you will be paid handsomely. Do we understand each other?"

What She Gives Them: 100 gold upfront, a letter of safe conduct, and a map of the local region. She points to the forest edges and tells them to speak to the locals, especially the fey, because they are the ones who know what is actually going on. She warns them that the Blackjackets will be watching for their return.

Transition to Naiad: As the party steps out of the Logging Hall and heads toward the docks to figure out their next move, the encounter with Palakar occurs. She has been watching them since they entered the town. Seeing them leave the hall with her "blessing," she has decided to risk revealing herself to warn them.

The air grows heavy with mist as you linger near the weathered wooden docks. The river churns against the pilings, its surface strangely dark and sluggish despite the steady current. You are about to turn away when the water explodes in a cascade of silver and green. A figure bursts from the depths, her skin pale as moonlight, her hair a tangled mass of river reeds and water lilies. She clings to the edge of the pier, her eyes wide, darting, and filled with a terror far older than any mortal fear.

Her voice is a frantic, bubbling whisper: "You must not go into the deep woods. The forest is sick. The trees are crying black sap, and the stones are bleeding with the mark of the Pale Hand and the Blackened Blade. I saw it in the depths. I saw the kings rising from their clay tombs. The old pact is broken... broken by something that is not of the flesh." She shudders violently, gripping the wood until her knuckles turn white.

She looks up at you, her eyes pleading, her voice dropping to a terrified murmur: "We had a good arrangement, the loggers and us. They took the old trees. They left the young ones. We showed them the best darkwood in the world because they acted like they respected us. But now, the water tastes of blood and sulfur. The Nymphs have sealed their borders. The satyrs are hiding. And the river is dying. Please, mortals. Before you cross the water, you must fix what is broken."

GM Note: The Naiad's Identity. Palakar is a naiad of the Great Goldpan River, and she is deeply frightened. She is a neutral, ancient spirit who has watched the human town of Macridi grow for centuries. She does not care about the politics of the Kalistocrats or the Blood Price; she only cares about the health of the river. She is a valuable, impartial source of information who knows almost every secret of the river network.

GM Note: The Pact. Palakar explains that the fey have a unique arrangement with the loggers of Macridi. Because the humans only fell the choicest trees and act with respect for the forest, the fey sometimes act as scouts, pointing out excellent specimens to the loggers. It was a fair trade. This partnership is now in jeopardy. She does not know exactly what caused the blight at Reiver's Right, but she knows that the poison is flowing downhill into the Profit's Flow, killing her kin and driving the fish away.

GM Note: The Boon. Palakar offers to give them a luck charm made of river stones to 'help them find their way' through the forest. The charm is a simple, smooth stone with a spiral carved into it. It glows faintly with a blue light when danger is near. If they cross the river or step into deep water, they can hold the charm to breathe and see underwater for 10 minutes, once per day.

GM Note: The Price. She does not give charity. She asks for a "gift of polished gold" to be thrown into the river upon their return. This is not a mere payment; it is an ancient blood price. If they refuse to give her the gold, or if they lie to her, the charm will crack and turn to river mud, and she will never speak to them again.

Palakar's Intel

Query What She Knows
The Blight It comes from the east, at Reiver's Right. The earth there is black and the trees weep sap. She believes someone or something has angered the ancient forest spirit.
The Courts The Court of Endless Revelry is terrified and hiding. The Court of Seasons has turned to ice and refuses to let the rivers flow through their lands.
The Mounts She cannot speak the name of the Desolation Blade Mounts. She says the water around them is "dead." She has seen the stone markers floating downstream, and carrying one brings bad luck to all water spirits.
Pulgari Estate She says the ground under the river at the southern fork has been burning for months. She saw a "man of marble and light" standing guard, but she does not trust him.
