Court of Seasons

The Court of Seasons
The Guardians of Time and Nature

1. The Eternal Cycle

Situated deep within the northeastern reaches of the Palakar Forest, the Court of Seasons is the most strictly guarded, fiercely territorial, and magically potent realm of the fey in Druma. Unlike the chaotic, boisterous Court of Endless Revelry, the Court of Seasons is a place of immense order, ancient laws, and pure, concentrated nature. It is governed by the Seasonal Queens—the four Nymph Queens of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter—who are bound together in an eternal, unbroken cycle of power.

The Court exists physically in a state of perpetual flux. The land is divided into four distinct zones, each locked in its own permanent season. There are groves where cherry blossoms fall endlessly in the warmth of eternal spring; sun-drenched meadows burning with the heat of high summer; orchards heavy with crimson fruit under the wind of endless autumn; and frozen lakes beneath the twilight gloom of never-ending winter. To cross these boundaries is to experience an entire year in a matter of hours.

The Seasonal Queens rule together, but they are rarely in agreement. They are bound by a powerful, ancient pact to ensure that the cycle of life, death, and rebirth continues without interruption. If one Queen falls, the balance of the Court shatters, and the resulting magical catastrophe can scour the entire forest of life. This is the foundational law of the Court—the four must remain in perfect, turbulent equilibrium.

2. The Queens of the Court

The Court of Seasons is led by four distinct arch-nymphs, each representing a major aspect of time. Each Queen commands a significant host of naiads, dryads, oreads, and lesser nymphs, and each has her own fiercely independent agenda and personality.

  • Queen Vessa of Spring: A radiant, beautiful naiad with hair of living vines and eyes of morning dew. She is the patron of rebirth, growth, and renewal. She is the most sympathetic to the humans of Macridi, believing they can be taught to respect the forest. She is currently weak, having had her power drained by the corrupted earth.
  • Queen Samara of Summer: A fierce, golden-skinned dryad with hair of burning autumn leaves. She is the embodiment of passion, heat, and the intense wild magic of the forest. She is furious with the humans for poisoning the rivers and has argued for a complete military mobilization against Macridi.
  • Queen Morrow of Autumn: A mysterious, sullen oread with hair of copper and amber. She governs the harvest, the mysterious magic of death and decay, and the gathering of ancient knowledge. She knows the deepest secrets of the Macridi Blade culture and has been warned of the coming Blackened Blade.
  • Queen Isolde of Winter: A pale, terrifying nymph with hair of ice and eyes of frozen starlight. She governs death, slumber, and the harsh, unforgiving law of nature. She has completely sealed off her lands. She believes that the only way to save the forest is to kill every human, burn every logging camp, and let the forest regrow untouched for a thousand years.

Currently, the political balance is shattered. Queen Vessa has been poisoned by the blight, and Queen Samara is calling for total war. The only thing preventing an immediate massacre is Queen Morrow, who is too interested in ancient secrets to care about the humans. But it is Queen Isolde who has taken absolute control of the outer borders, freezing anyone who approaches without her explicit permission.

3. The Iron Law of Trespass

The Court of Seasons is the only fey faction in the Palakar that has a strict, non-negotiable law of Absolute Territorial Sovereignty. Once a creature steps over the boundary into the Court, they are at the mercy of the Queens. There is no legal defense, no Blood Price, and no recourse. The Court views itself as a separate nation whose borders are enforced by raw, overwhelming magical power.

The nymphs do not ask for permission to enter; they simply require that no one ever attempts to enter at all. If a traveler stumbles into their lands, they will be captured, tried in a court of pure nature, and either transformed into a tree (if they are deemed "disrespectful"), driven mad by haunting visions (if they are deemed "curious"), or let go only after a grueling ordeal (if they are deemed "entertaining").

This law is not a recent development. It is part of the ancient treaty that bound the human town of Macridi to the forest. The humans are allowed to harvest marked trees at the outer edge of the forest, but they are strictly forbidden from ever going deeper than the threshold of the Court of Seasons. Any violation of this law grants the Queens the right to enact "Winter's Mercy"—an immediate, painless death by freezing.

GM Note: The nymphs are not the "good" fey. They are the highest form of nature's law. They will punish intruders for the slightest provocation. The only way to enter the Court peacefully is to be accompanied by a satyr of the Court of Endless Revelry (who are the natural diplomats of the fey), or to offer a tribute that is genuinely considered "beautiful" by the Queens.

4. The Poisoning of the Cycle

The current crisis facing the Court of Seasons is unprecedented. The blight that originated at Reiver's Right is not just a physical sickness; it is a magical corruption that feeds on the entropy of the Seasonal Cycle. As the black sap seeps into the Great Goldpan River, it has begun to poison the magical springs that feed the Queen Vessa. She is withering, turning gray, and her powers of renewal are failing.

Because Vessa is dying, the balance of the court is failing. Summer is becoming unbearably hot, Autumn is shedding its leaves years too early, and Winter is refusing to give way to Spring. The entire forest is teetering on the edge of a magical collapse. If the cycle breaks, the Palakar will not just die; it will be unmade, dissolving into raw, chaotic Feywild energy.

The Queens are aware of the blight, but they do not understand its origin. They believe it is an attack by the humans of Macridi, who have always been viewed with suspicion. They do not know that the blight is actually a reaction to the ancient Macridi Blade culture being awakened by the loggers. They are blind to the fact that the real enemy is not the Guild, but the ancient power that is trying to reclaim the forest.

Immediate Danger: Queen Isolde has decided that if the humans caused the blight, the humans must be purged. She has ordered her Winter Court to march on the borders of the forest. If the party cannot clear their name and prove that the true enemy is the Blackened Blade, the Winter Court will freeze Macridi solid.

5. Secrets of the Ancient Pact

The Court of Seasons is the secret keeper of the Ancient Pact—the original treaty between the Kellid people and the fey. This was not a treaty written in ink; it was a treaty written in living blood. It stated that the humans could use the forest as long as they never dug into the earth deeper than the roots of a tree.

This law was the reason the ancient Macridi Blade culture was destroyed. When they began digging into the earth to unearth the Blackened Blade and its dark power, the fey forced them to pay the ultimate Blood Price. The Kellids were wiped out by their own greed. The Queen Morrow has hidden the original copy of this Pact in her personal vault, understanding that it is the only thing that can protect the forest from a repeat of the disaster.

The parties' discovery of the entrance to the catacombs at Reiver's Right is exactly what the Court of Seasons has been waiting for. Morrow knows that the Blackened Blade has been unearthed, and that the ancient blood magic is returning. She is currently weighing the option of sharing her knowledge with the party—or simply executing them, so they do not inadvertently free the ancient curse.

6. Navigating the Court

Entering the Court of Seasons requires a delicate, highly dangerous game of diplomacy. The party cannot simply walk in and demand an audience. They must first make contact with the outer patrols of the Winter Court, who are made of ice nymphs and hostile winter wolves. They must prove they have no ill intent by offering a gift that represents "new life" to the withering Queen Vessa.

The best gift they can offer is a piece of the pure water from the Great Goldpan River, or a seed from a tree that has not been corrupted by the blight. If they can offer this, they will be brought before the full court. Here, they must face the Queens' council and convince them that they are not agents of the humans, but independent actors seeking to save the forest. They will have to answer the Queens' riddles and prove their respect for nature.

If they succeed, the Queens will lend them a powerful magical blessing—the Boon of the Seasons. This allows the party to travel through the forest freely, heal their wounds, and gain advantage against the blighted creatures. If they fail, they will be turned into trees themselves, their spirits left to scream in the frozen ground of the Winter Court for all eternity.

Vital Clue: The Court of Seasons knows the exact location of the original entrance to the Macridi Blade Catacombs. They will share this map with the party, but only if they swear an unbreakable Oath of Nature to never use the Blackened Blade. Breaking this oath will mark them as eternal enemies of all fey.

7. Treasures of the Court

  • Frostpetal Elixir: A tiny vial of pure Winter's dew. Drinking it grants a character permanent resistance to cold and allows them to walk across ice without slipping.
  • Seed of the Eternal Spring: A beautiful, glowing seed. If planted, it grows into a tree that will bear fruit once a year. The fruit cures any disease—including magical blights.
  • Queen Morrow's Map: An ancient, living map of the Palakar that shows the exact locations of the forgotten underground tunnels and fey crossings. It is drawn in living ink that changes as the forest changes.
  • Oath of Nature: A fey geas placed on the party. As long as they keep their oath to not use the Blackened Blade, they gain advantage on all saving throws against fey magic. If they break it, they become permanently cursed to wither into a tree over the course of one year.
