The Roots of the World

The Roots of the World

A long backstory for Kaelen Stormborn

Before the Whispers

Kaelen was born during a lightning storm that split the sky above the Wyrmbones. The elders of his clan — the Stone-Spear tribe — said it was an omen. He was marked from birth as one who would walk between worlds, who would hear the voice of the mountain and the sky.

He was trained as a Root-Walker, a rare calling among his people. Root-Walkers feel the pulse of the earth, the tremors of distant events, the whispers of the World Tree that connects all things. They are guardians of the ancient places, protectors of the thin places where the material world touches the divine.

Kaelen spent decades walking the ridges, listening to the stones, reading the patterns of the wind. He was at peace.

The Tremor

Then, three years ago, he felt it — a tremor not of the earth, but of memory. Something beneath the Shaar was stirring. It was not the movement of tectonic plates or the shifting of deep water. It was the recollection of something ancient, something that had been asleep for longer than the mountains had stood.

At first, he dismissed it. The earth is old, and it remembers many things. But the tremor grew. It became a hum, then a whisper, then a word — a name he could not speak aloud without feeling the ground beneath him shudder.

The Calling

His shaman, an elder named Grakka, called him to the peak of the highest peak. There, in the thin air, she spoke to him of the old stories — the ones that were not told to children, the ones that spoke of the time before the gods, when the world was ruled by beings of alien thought and endless hunger.

"You must go," she said. "Something is waking. And if it wakes fully, the world will not survive."

She pressed into his hands a fragment of stone, carved with runes so ancient they predated the dwarves. "This will guide you. The roots of the World Tree will protect you. But you must find the source of the tremor — and you must silence it, or bind it."

Now

Kaelen walks the Shaar now, a stranger in a land of nomads and whispers. He has heard the name Zhakaraad on the wind. He has seen the yuan-ti digging in places they should not. He knows, with the certainty of a root that reaches deep into the earth, that the tremor beneath the lake is the same tremor he felt from the mountains.

He does not know what he will find beneath the water. He does not know if he can stop it. But he knows that the World Tree has chosen him for this task — and he will not turn away.

"The roots of the world remember. And they are calling."
