The Shadow's Debt
A long backstory for Vex
The Streets of Kormul
Vex was born in the gutters of Kormul, the City of Cults. She never knew her parents — they were probably dead, or maybe they just didn't want her. What mattered was survival.
She learned to pick pockets before she could read. She learned to lie before she could write her name. She learned to trust no one, because trust was a weakness that got you killed.
By the time she was twelve, she was running with a crew of thieves who operated in the city's Underdark markets. She was good — better than most. She had a knack for seeing things that others missed, for finding the hidden paths, for slipping through cracks that didn't seem to exist.
The Job
When she was seventeen, she was hired for a job that changed everything. A mysterious patron — a woman with golden eyes and a serpent's smile — hired her to steal a map from a yuan-ti temple. The map showed the location of something called the "Emeralds of Merrshaulk."
Vex didn't ask questions. She just did the job.
She succeeded. But the job wasn't the end — it was the beginning. She discovered that the yuan-ti were using the Emeralds to perform a ritual, a ritual that would break something ancient and terrible. She discovered that the woman who hired her was a yuan-ti herself, playing a game that Vex didn't understand.
The Choice
Vex could have walked away. She could have taken her payment and disappeared into the shadows of Kormul. But something stopped her. Maybe it was the way the yuan-ti talked about the ritual, as if they were puppets dancing on strings. Maybe it was the fear in their voices when they spoke of "the voice beneath the water."
She decided to stay. She decided to find out what was really happening. She decided to take the fight to the yuan-ti.
Now
Vex walks the Shaar with a blade at her side and a secret in her heart. She has been hired by a woman named Mira of Clan Sunrider to investigate the yuan-ti's activities. She doesn't know if Mira is trustworthy. She doesn't know if she can stop the ritual. But she knows that she has a debt to pay — and she always pays her debts.
