Cedar Court

The Cedar Court
Historical & Regional Reference on the Dryads of the Palakar Forest

1. The Dryads of Northwestern Palakar

The Cedar Court is the home of the dryads of the Palakar Forest and one of the forest's three major fey courts. It lies somewhere within the northwestern Palakar, though its precise location is not generally known outside the fey community.

Despite its name, the Cedar Court is not a conventional settlement, palace, or formal collection of buildings. It is instead a congregation of the trees belonging to Palakar's oldest dryads. The gathering of these ancient bonded trees forms the center of the dryads' community.

Of Palakar's three fey courts, the Cedar Court is particularly reclusive. Outsiders are not invited to visit, and most Drumans know little about the place beyond its approximate location in the northwestern forest and its association with Palakar's oldest dryads.

Important Distinction: The word court should not be taken to mean that the Cedar Court resembles a mortal palace, village, or government center. Its defining feature is the congregation of ancient dryads and their trees.

2. The Palakar Forest

The Palakar Forest occupies a broad region of central Druma and has endured since before the modern nation existed. The forest survived Earthfall, later dwarven occupation, and centuries of political change while remaining home to a substantial fey population.

The Profit's Flow and the Great Goldpan River naturally divide much of the forest into regions associated with three distinct fey communities: the dryads of the Cedar Court, the satyrs of the Court of Endless Revelry, and the nymphs of the Court of Seasons.

Palakar contains numerous species of valuable timber, including trees sought by Druma's woodworking and logging industries. It is also known for an abundance of extremely old cedar trees, some of which are believed to date back as far as Earthfall.

Much of the forest's deep interior remains poorly known to outsiders. Macridi is the principal non-fey settlement within Palakar, while logging elsewhere in the forest is conducted under agreements with its fey inhabitants rather than through unrestricted settlement.

3. Ryauhm

The most prominent figure associated with the Cedar Court is Ryauhm, an elder dryad and druid who has been accepted as a leader among Palakar's dryads.

Ryauhm is counted among the forest's oldest inhabitants. Traditions concerning him claim that he is older than the Palakar Forest itself, or that the lineage of his tree reaches back to a time before the forest existed in its present form. Whatever the literal truth of those traditions, his extraordinary age is central to his reputation among the dryads.

Ryauhm's leadership is notable because the dryads are not described as possessing a rigid hierarchy comparable to a mortal government. His authority is instead presented as something the other dryads have come to recognize and accept.

His most important historical role was helping establish the Oath of Everlasting Friendship, the agreement governing relations between the fey of Palakar Forest and the people of Druma.

4. The Oath of Everlasting Friendship

Relations between the people of Druma and the fey of the Palakar are governed by an agreement known as the Oath of Everlasting Friendship. Ryauhm was one of the principal figures involved in establishing the agreement and bringing the dryads into it.

The Oath allows Drumans to harvest timber from the Palakar, but it places clear limits on exploitation of the forest. Loggers are expected to take no more timber than is needed and to replant areas that have been logged.

This arrangement makes forestry in Palakar fundamentally different from unrestricted commercial logging. The region's valuable timber can be harvested, but continued access depends upon maintaining the accommodation between Druman industry and the forest's fey inhabitants.

Historically, this balance has allowed Macridi to develop major logging and woodworking industries without clearing the Palakar on the scale that its valuable timber might otherwise encourage.

Terms Known to Outsiders: The clearest publicly understood principles of the Oath are restraint in harvesting and the replanting of logged land. More elaborate rules should not be assumed unless established elsewhere.

5. Logging & Settlement

Macridi's economy depends heavily upon logging, woodworking, and river trade, but the presence of the fey sharply limits how human settlement can expand through the Palakar.

Historically, logging camps beyond Macridi have existed only with the agreement of the forest's inhabitants and have generally been treated as non-permanent working settlements. Permanent expansion into the deeper forest has proven difficult, both because of the terrain and because of the need to avoid violating agreements with the fey.

The result is an unusual relationship: the forests surrounding Macridi are economically valuable and actively harvested, yet extensive portions of Palakar remain outside ordinary Druman settlement and commercial development.

6. The Charcoal Wars

The importance of maintaining peaceful relations with Palakar's fey is reinforced by the history of the Charcoal Wars during the distant Age of Anguish. During that conflict, dwarves negotiating with the forest's native fey abandoned peaceful relations and burned large portions of the Palakar.

The fighting proved disastrous for both sides. Even long afterward, physical evidence of the destruction remained beneath the forest soil, where layers of charred and burned timber marked the extent of the ancient fires.

The Charcoal Wars became part of the historical memory surrounding relations between outsiders and the Palakar. They demonstrate that conflict over the forest's use has precedent, and that large-scale attempts to dominate the region can carry consequences for both the fey and those seeking its resources.

7. What Outsiders Actually Know

  • Location: The Cedar Court lies somewhere in the northwestern Palakar Forest.
  • Nature of the Court: It is a congregation of trees belonging to the forest's oldest dryads rather than a conventional settlement.
  • Population: It is the principal home and gathering place of Palakar's dryads.
  • Leadership: The elder dryad Ryauhm has been accepted as a leader among the dryads.
  • History: Ryauhm was one of the architects of the Oath of Everlasting Friendship.
  • Relations with Druma: The Oath permits controlled logging provided that harvesters take no more than necessary and replant logged areas.
  • Access: Outsiders are not invited to visit the Cedar Court, and ordinary Drumans know little about its internal life.
Limits of the Record: Published accounts provide very little detail about the Cedar Court's internal customs, physical arrangement, religious practices, or day-to-day society. Claims about specific laws, rituals, offerings, magical root networks, hidden treasures, punishments, or formal factions go beyond the established record.
