A palm-sized brass seal hangs from a faded blue cord. Its face depicts a cup beneath a stone arch, surrounded by the words “The Road Welcomes All.” A small notch in the rim matches a mark on the old waystation's charter.

Purpose

This is the missing ceremonial seal of Wayfarer's Gate. It authenticates the roadwardens' supply receipts and passage papers. Its recovery proves that the party has reclaimed a symbol of the waystation's authority and helps expose the raiders' fraudulent road tolls.

Quest: Restore the Open Road

Objective: Recover the seal and return it to Mara Fenwick, Steward of the Roadwardens, at Wayfarer's Gate. Recover the stolen provisions and the toll ledger as supporting evidence.

GM Placement and Clues

Mawgrin the Tollkeeper keeps the seal in the leather pouch beside his toll ledger, using its impression to make extortion demands look official. The cup-and-arch symbol matches the wax seal on Mara's invitation. The notch in its rim and the waystation charter let Mara identify the original.

Using the Seal

Pressed into soft wax, it leaves the roadwardens' distinctive impression. It grants no numerical bonuses, magical effects, or automatic authority over strangers. Its significance comes from who recognizes it and the evidence accompanying it. It does not bypass the opening gate puzzle.

Resolution

Mara uses the returned seal to issue authentic passage notices and organize delivery of the recovered food. The party is publicly recognized as friends of the roadwardens. Any payment or additional treasure comes from the adventure's existing reward budget.

If the seal is lost or destroyed, the ledger, recovered provisions, and witness testimony can still establish what happened. The quest can conclude without making this item a mandatory obstacle.
