How to Play — The Border Guardian

🎯 How to Play Kael

Play Kael if you want to stand in the road and decide what gets past you.

His best scenes challenge him to protect people who disagree about what protection means.

⚔️ Your Core Identity

Kael is a guardian, not a killer. He fights to protect, not to destroy. His spear is a tool of deterrence—a way to draw a line that others cannot cross. When you play Kael, you are constantly asking: "Who do I protect, and who do I let through?"

Roleplaying Tagline: "I stand in the road so others don't have to."

🎭 Roleplay Guidance

  • Be the Shield: Position yourself between danger and those who cannot defend themselves. You are the wall that breaks the charge.
  • Speak with Actions: Kael is not a great talker. He communicates through where he stands, who he protects, and what he lets pass.
  • Question Loyalty: Your sibling's disappearance haunts you. You are torn between family loyalty and the forest's warning signs. This tension defines you.
  • Trust the Forest: You grew up marking safe trails through Boarwood. You know the forest's moods better than most. Trust your instincts.

⚡ Combat Style

  • Front-Line Guardian: Use your shield and spear to control the battlefield. Keep enemies away from your allies.
  • Reactive Defense: Use Reactive Shield to raise your shield when hit, and Shield Block to absorb damage.
  • Sudden Charge: Close the distance quickly. You are the first to meet the enemy, and the last to retreat.
  • Attack of Opportunity: Punish anyone who tries to slip past you. You are the line that holds.

🌟 Key Scenes for Kael

  • The Divided Tollhouse (Act 1): Mediate between the woodcutters and the shrine keepers. You understand both—the need to work the land and the need to respect it.
  • The Gray Gardeners' Hunt (Act 1): Rescue the dryad. This is personal—you are protecting a creature of the forest, just as you once protected your sibling.
  • The Silver-Tusked Guardian (Act 1): Choose to heal the guardian rather than fight it. Show that you understand the covenant's principle of Repair.
  • The Missing Guide (Sidequest): Find your sibling. Learn the truth about their betrayal, coercion, or harder loyalty. This is your arc.

📈 Advancement Priorities

  • Level 2: Take Intimidating Strike or Combat Grab to control enemies.
  • Level 4: Take Shield Warden to protect adjacent allies.
  • Level 6: Take Quick Shield Block to block more often.
  • Skills: Continue investing in Athletics, Survival, and Nature. Consider training in Society or Religion as you encounter Edme's politics and the covenant's history.

🎭 Roleplaying Notes

Voice & Demeanor

  • Tone: Quiet, steady, and deliberate. Kael speaks with weight behind his words.
  • Body Language: Always positioned to guard. Stands with his spear planted, feet shoulder-width apart.
  • Motto: "The road is safest when someone stands in it."

Key Relationships

  • Reeve Halden Crowl: Kael respects his authority but distrusts his desperation.
  • Ormand Vex: The refugee scholar reminds Kael of what happens when people stop protecting what matters.
  • The Red Raven: Kael sees himself in the vigilante—both are trying to protect people who don't want to be saved.
  • Luma Barkbright (Leshy Druid): Kael understands Luma's connection to the forest. They share a bond of trust in the wild.

Quirks & Habits

  • Watches the Forest: Always scanning the treeline, listening for sounds that don't belong.
  • Marking Trails: Kael unconsciously marks trees and stones, leaving signs for others to follow.
  • Speaks to the Boars: When alone, Kael mutters to the animals he hunts—apologizing, honoring them.

Inner Conflict

  • Family vs. Forest: Your sibling vanished after accepting Tandak coin to guide a military survey. Were they a traitor, a victim, or something else?
  • Protection vs. Control: You want to protect people, but sometimes protection means letting them make their own mistakes.
  • Law vs. Justice: The covenant is law. The Gray Gardeners are lawlessness. Where do you stand?
