Cookhouse & Mess

Fifty Places and No One to Fill Them

Long tables fill the mess hall, benches pushed back at uneven angles. The kitchen beyond is orderly but cold. Sacks of flour, dried beans, smoked meat, and root vegetables are stacked for a camp that expected to keep feeding dozens of people.

The cookhouse is useful because it shows the camp was not running out of food and was not preparing to close. Stores remain sufficient for days or weeks of normal operation.

Survival or Cooking Lore DC 15: The main hearth has not been used for roughly three days. This confirms the Gilded Ledger rumor that smoke stopped rising from Reiver's Right before anyone in Macridi knew exactly what had happened.

On a critical success, the character notices the final meal was prepared for nearly a full workforce. The silence did not follow a gradual reduction in staff.

A chalkboard near the pantry lists an unusually large standing order for lamp oil and extra late-shift meals. By itself this is unremarkable. Combined with other clues, it supports the existence of work continuing after normal logging hours.
